IE11 preview stopped working after October Windows Update

I loaded IE11 preview a few days ago and it has worked flawlessly. Today I ran Windows Update and after this IE11 would not open - I just got an error message saying IE could not operate. It took a number of closing of the error dialogue box to get the error boxes tto stop appearing. I have gone back to IE10 and have no problems again. I tried reinstalling 11 and it worked fine again - until I ran Windows Update again same problem happened. I am sure there is some conflict with an update or more - KB2879017 looks a likely culprit.

Grateful for any advice on how to get IE11 to co-exist with Windows Update. Thanks.

I'm running W7 Professional 64bit. Entirely stable system - no problems.

Thanks. Yes, it seems odd. Here are the entries in the installed updates -

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB2879017)
    Installation date: ‎08/‎10/‎2013 19:20
    and
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 Release Preview for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2879017)
    Installation date: ‎08/‎10/‎2013 19:04

It's irritating because I liked IE11 very much but don't want to run it without its security updates.

    Any ideas, please?

    KB-2879017
That is the newest version just released it shows the same with ie10 so it doesn't seems to be x-p related.
Not that I'm using ie11 rtm but even if you rolled back to ie10 this kb would apply to it as well.

You might try to Uninstall Silverlight and reload everything but it and see what happens but do load the kb # just not Silverlight.

Thanks. What makes you suspect Silverlight is causing trouble? The error box that comes up says:

    "Internet Explorer has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution
    is available".

    A solution was not available.

Curiously, with ie10 installed, the updates installed continues to show the ie11 security patch as installed. When I reinstall ie11 this update continues to be listed. But when I then go to Windows Updates I am invited to install the update (as if it was not already installed). I go ahead and reinstall and reboot. IE11 crashes and Windows Update shows the ie11 security update has failed (though the earlier version is still in the successful updates list).

Maybe I'll wait till the ie11 proper release.

If I remember correctly Silverlight was checked along with all of the other Important updates,
Of which I unchecked Silverlight just because it has little to do with Internet explorer and I never load other stuff with security patches or new versions of Internet explorer are released,
    You never know about Silverlight,
So few things rely on it so I usually Uninstall it before downloading it's replacement,

Waiting for the full release is always a good idea,
I never use a preview version or developer preview because of all remaining bugs,
I usually wait a few months after the full release,
Ie10 was an exception which as soon as it went full release I downloaded it but could only do that through msn.com and not through the Windows update system,
    No telling why ?

Unfortunately I need Silverlight to watch pay as you go films on my pc. It's strange that no one else seems to have had this problem (according to Google). Normally these sort of conflicts throw up more than one case.
