Bogus Chrome crash message

I have had Chrome installed on my Win 7 PC for a long time and have had no problems with it until recently. I don't use it as my #1 browser, however. I use IE mostly and use Firefox and Chrome occasionally.

Several days ago I started to get the dreaded 'Whoa! Google Chrome has crashed' popup. This was a mystery since the message was popping up ad nauseum when Chrome wasn't open. Amazing how a program can crash when it is closed. Annoyingly, I can't see anyone else online who has had this message appear when Chrome is not running. But surely I am not alone.

Being driven crazy with this constant interruption, I have uninstalled Chrome, but would reinstall it if someone can help me stop the popup. Installing an older version of Chrome might be a temporary solution.

One thing I noticed was that the popup appeared even when no browser was open and Windows Live Mail 2011 was open. This might indicate a clash of some kind, but my wife uses a Win 7 PC with virtually the same setup and she hasn't seen the popup. Nobody in a computer group I belong to has seen it either.

Any ideas how to overcome this irritation would be most gratefully received.

I had 'Google Chrome has crashed' popup before due to slow congested line and hit by malware.

I am no expert in this but there are 4 possibilities:
a.you installed a new software that software might affect the Chrome function.
Mine did. 7zip did something to my system.
b.Windows updates affecting this version of Chrome. Yes, updates do influenced Chrome.
c. Chrome update installation clashed with Win7. This had happened before.
d. infected with a hidden malware that affects Chrome.

You have to run a thorough check or else it's difficult to diagnose.

Meanwhile, however, I have tried unsuccessfully to install two earlier Chrome versions. Some nonsense about looking for an untitled page stopped me.

Just for fun I then had yet another crack at installing the latest version, and two hours later I haven't seen that ridiculous popup. I don't know why but it seems to have gone away. Perhaps Google has finally accepted that Chrome isn't open and so can't crash.

I hope that I'm not being too optimistic.

I can't say for sure what.Sometimes, some extensions which you downloaded are malware in disguise and caused unwanted pop-ups.But when you uninstalled Chrome, the malware is not deleted but hidden else where in the registry. New version of Chrome may no longer starts the malware as the extension is not there. If you downloaded the same extension it may run again. Hopefully, everything is OK. Be safe, though.

I spoke too soon. After hours of no popup yesterday, I turned on the PC this morning and soon the stupid thing reappeared. Chrome was again binned. No Chrome, no popup. I will wait for a stable version to be released. The recent 'updates' have been beta and dev. It is interestting that a so-called update appeared just before the fake popup appeared. But I can really do without Chrome if this issue can't be resolved. I don't think malware is involved.

That's odd. Peculiar to Google Chrome (PTGC)! Something is wrong.

Use Opera or FireFox. FireFox can be dangerous as the add-ons or extensions can be a nuisance or malware if you don't know the author(s) of the add-ons or extensions. I did add an add-on only to find out it's a tracking software disguised as an add-on or extension.
Opera is OK but lacks support.Good to some extend.
