FWIW: I have found problems with users email smtp settings. Most have been cured by using port 2525 as the smtp port.
many email isp's block port 25 unless your connected directly to them.
Your mileage may vary. <G>

They SMTP port is set up to 465, the same on both computers. I changed it to 2525 and the result was that when I tried sending a message, I didn't get an error it just timed out. Could that mean this is a problem with the ISP?
Oh my goodness ... way too much "adware"!!
Please download TFC by Old Timer TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go Forums and save it to your desktop.
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

I downloaded and ran TFC and it got rid of 221 Mbytes. I tried to down load ESET and I got a new window and a screen that was black except for a link in the middle. I clicked on it and nothing happened. I tried it twice. Any suggestions?
DUH!! I clicked on the name instead of the blue link. I ran it and the result is;
C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine\C\ProgramData\Tarma Installer\{361E80BE-388B-4270-BF54-A10C2B756504}\_Setupx.dll.vir a variant of Win32/Adware.Yontoo.B application cleaned by deleting - quarantined
Does this help?
Yep!
Now can you use your original password? If not, choose a new one and reset it on both computers.
I tried to use my original password again and it did not work. According to my enail client's web page (I use Mozilla Thunderbird). "Thunderbird doesn't provide a way for a user to enter POP/IMAP/SMTP servers password when configuring an account. When you change a password using Thunderbird it has no effect on the real password". I am able to use the password manager in Thunderbird and delete all passwords and reenter them. That becomes a major task. The saved password on my laptop worked for a long time and only recently stopped working. Since I had only one saved password in the password manager on my laptop, I was able to delete it and reentered it when I tried sending an email and,of course, it failed.
