Thanks - pity WL 2009 doesn't have the repair tool.

DavidW7ncus is trying to see if a new WLM account that connects to a new account, has the issue. He's taking a slightly different but similar test approach I tried with the oeaccount config, but by creating teh WLM 2009 account manually.

Regarding my test: Have you removed the OLcom account from WLM 2009? - you don't need it and it might fog the issue. Please remove it if you have not done so already. Please also delete the folder
C:\Tipiford\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\_oeacts

DavidW7ncus also asked about migrating to WLM 2012 - you replied that there were issues with pictures. If your concern is about photoalbums in mail, you can rest assured there is no issue. I've had this discussion with a few people some get it, some don't. The default is photoalbums (a bad choice MS made, but that what it is) - single pictures can be inserted or drag and dropped into mail - no album, no cloud crap.

If I misread your reply, please help me understand your concerns about WE 2012 (why WE? MS is moving away from the Live brand in favor of the Essentials brand - it's a name thing WLM or WEM... I'm simply following the future)

Plese don't get me wrong, you can stay on WLM 2009 knowing that it is 6 year old technology bound to have problems as MS moves it's other software (Hotmail->Live Mail-> forward.

I'll stay subscribed to this thread to see your answers, but DavidW7ncus has the lead right now.

Windows 7 pro 64 bit with XP Mode

...if you can get help from MS to try and fix a "corrupted" Hotmail account.

I will attempt this, as the only thing I'm missing from reorganizing is contacts. I was fully backed up and feeling secure because I knew my calendar and contacts were retrievable at the Hotmail account (never take for granted, that which you think is granted).
I have manually gotten what I needed from the calendar, but there's no way of doing that with the contacts--oh, there is a way, but not for me.

My next step is to get to the right person at MS, a sometimes difficult process.

Thanks to all of you for the yeoman's effort.

Always exit WLM before any action I suggest.

If you have a local backup then you might find your contacts in a hidden system folder. Each release stores the data in different folders.

Edit: bad memory - see tipiford's correct location in the next post

Note that the folder is Windows Live, NOT Windows Live Mail
WLM 2009: \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts\default\DBStore
WLM 2011: \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts\default\15.4\DBStore
WEM 2012: \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts\default\15.5\DBStore

Folder contents:
<DIR> Backup, <DIR> LogFiles, contacts.edb, contacts.pat, dbstore.ini, edb.chk

Rename the exisiting folder \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts
to \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts_renamed

Copy the backup copy of \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts
to \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\

In my 2009 version, it is found here, C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\ (two registry address folders in this folder, each containing the DBStore with files you mentioned). But there's nothing "hiding" on this disk, I formatted it before I reinstalled the OS.

But, Thanx

Thanks, too many changes for me to recall. I depended on memory (bad idea)

You are correct I revisted the field guide: Windows Live Mail ? Contacts Database | The Field Guide

Yeah, I was referring to your backup. Maybe you meant that your backup was Hotmail.
