    Methinks it's a bug!

Perhaps the solution is not using the address toolbar
.. replacing it with a user toolbar containing search
.. or pinning search to the taskbar
could use a little help figuring out how to do either, but I think pinning search to the taskbar is a better soultion for Ira
I have no intention of using a 3rd party app/toolbar, this is a fairly minor inconvenience, I just like to troubleshoot :)

What do you mean "pinning search to the taskbar"?

Paying attention to the jumplist, if you enter a single WORD, it has "Search for "WORD"" and if you select that option, the entry in the bar becomes "? WORD" which does a search for it, like I'm wanting. This may be a good hint, but I don't want to have to type "? WORD" every time either.

If I knew the exe for Start menu search box I could try some of these, but alas

Not a 3rd party app - Create a new toolbar with search in it.

You can drag objects to the taskbar and 'pin' them there - so again if I knew the search exe...

Well aren't we the finiky one... ? word isn't good enough

I missed the escape character - looked for it, missed it
    makes sense though

I guess I'm done - I don't use that feature and I've exhausted my efforts.

Good luck - post if you find something
