Endeavor I just has one crash this morning what is the best method to send you the email file?
Once you show hidden files and get to
C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders\Inbox
You can add columns to the Explorer window. Add the following columns (right click any existing column, date, size, or type... and select more... at the bottom of the menu list
then place a checkmark in the following fields:
Date received
Sender name
Sender address
Subject
Hit the OK button
Maximize the explorer window
then Right click on any column heading and click
Size all columns to fit
If you sort by Sender it might be easier to locate the msg causing the crash
The open the file in Notepad and replace all occurances of your personal information (Name, email address) with dummy values.
Don't delete the line, that might cause testing problems.
for eaxmple,
replace your name
Slarty Bart with Some Guy
replace your eMail address
Bill798xyzzy(a)RealServName.com with FakeAddr(a)FakeXYZserv.zzz
Right click on the file and open with -> Notepad
click the "Other Programs" chevron
untick "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" in the lower left
you don't want to associate .eml files with Notepad,
you just want to open the file outside of WinMail
Save as... to your Desktop
WinMailCrash.eml
The content will look odd, but it is readable. Here's an example
After you "wash" the file of any personal information, send it over to endeavor.-Code:Subject: climate change Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2013 18:38:00 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0009_01CE259A.0C5E48E0" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal Importance: Normal X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V16.4.3505.912 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0009_01CE259A.0C5E48E0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Two Reasons Climate Change Is Not Like Other Environmental Problems ------=_NextPart_000_0009_01CE259A.0C5E48E0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <HTML><HEAD></HEAD> <BODY dir=3Dltr> <DIV dir=3Dltr> <DIV style=3D"FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial'; COLOR: #000000; FONT-SIZE: 10pt"> <DIV><A title=3Dhttp://www.commondreams.org/view/2013/03/20-2=20 href=3D"http://www.commondreams.org/view/2013/03/20-2"= reams.org/view/2013/03/20-2</A></DIV></DIV></DIV></BODY></HTML> ------=_NextPart_000_0009_01CE259A.0C5E48E0--
Good Morning,
Yes andjayik that folder is a hidden folder which I assumed the basics you would know and have Explorer settings set to show All Hidden Folders/Files.
For a reason I specifically suggested to enable date "Created" column while looking for the .eml file in 'Windows Explorer' folder for an accurate reason, because the date 'Modified' column in this case is always a moving target of present, and so the date "Created" column, clicking to sort by that, would be the best exacting way to locate it.
Just identify exact date/time of offending email within WinMail, matching that to what's in it's holding Explorer folder, and that'll be the one.
tktk88 there is no need to open the email at all in WinMail (or otherwise) this way you won't crash for one thing; let's keep it simple.
Naturally for privacy don't attach the file to a post. I thought there was a PM attachment option, hmmm..., well if not you'll have to upload it to a common file hoster and send me the link via PM to fetch it, or send me your email addy via PM
There is no need to open the email as a text file and edit it, since if you then 'save in text' will destroy the HTML format with what that will mean; again let's keep it simple. I need that email as is or it will be of no help. In truth though, if you can't trust me then you can't trust anyone anywhere, that said, if you still can't trust me seeing your email address and name, then I don't belong here :)
My only purpose here is to be of help, solve problems where I can, and keep WinMail alive for advanced users.
endeavor I am completely comfortable with attaching the file on PM and sending it to you just wanted to be sure you were ok with it.......I will do that now thanks so mucjh
Okay I received your BestBuy .eml file, and am pleased to say it opens fine with No Problems Whatsoever, on my working computer. I can view the email completely in every way that I try. For gp I even sent it via email back to myself and all is fine.
It's a January 23 BestBuy 2 Day Door Buster sale, etc, etc...
If you have one from Angies List? ..was it you who mentioned that one, then please send that along too.
I can't fix or troubleshoot what's not broken for me. I need to see the problem in order to isolate/fix it.
It may be that this issue is isolated only to your own computer. iow, you have different softwares installed somehow affecting your setup. (I'm not sure what it is wrong with andjayik's issue or even if it is the same)
I have every single Windows Update there is available, installed, on Windows 7 Pro, running WinMail
I didn't see that you did that until now re-reading the entire thread.
Impressive and good work, I can see you are determined; that's something I would have done myself.
What else did you install before you installed WinMail... there's got to be something.
In the meantime both of you, if you want, temporarily you do realize you can just set your Best Buy and Angies List accounts options, to only Send to you as Plain Text, or alternately you can set WinMail options to only read in Plain Text. Also websites usually give you a link within the email to open the ad campaign within the browser (which if it crashes there, then we are closer to the real problem)
endeavor: tktk88 and I have exchanged some PMs today re: moving up to Windows Essentials Mail or Thunderbird. OP is thinking about taking one or the other for a test drive - see if it feels right.
Just letting you know so you can focus on andjayik. tktk88 might be out of the loop while OP investigates the options.
Thanks for testing this, you've already shown that it is NOT the mshtml version and that it is NOT an issue spefific to the one msg.
This is going to be tough to find, but you're on the ball.
Bill
Okay Bill,
You understand the more installing of random email clients that one installs on top of, then the more it has the propensity to break each others client as well as WinMail; an image restore or re-install may be the only way back to WinMail since their individual uninstallers rarely put back what it took.
As to andjayik I'm not able to help if he's unable to enable a folder column, or ask you how to do it when you had so well answered him already in the post before his very question.
