"Do this automatically for files like this from now on" NOT WORKING

Using Firefox 27, on both a Vista SP2 x86 laptop as well as a Windows7 Pro x64. Same symptom for both.

The "do this automatically for files like this from now on" checkbox does NOT seem have any effect.

Even though I have the checkbox checked, every time I open an attachment of the same type (e.g. DOCX for MS Word) Firefox still presents the same dialog box asking me if I want to use the related viewer program (e.g. MS Word, by default).

I've checked the box, because I obviously want it to simply launch MS Word whenever I click on the attachment icon in the web mail interface (from Charter.net web mail site). I don't want to have to click on the OK box in the dialog every time. But the function of that checkbox doesn't seem to be working as advertised.

Is this a known issue with Firefox (seems hard to believe)? Unique to web mail programs?? Unique specifically to the specific Charter.net web mail interface from Firefox?

    Any help? thanks.

    Options for applications

Try changing the options for your application to save file instead of always ask.

    Firefox > Tools > Options > Applications

Screenshot is just an example of the window. I don't have the same apps installed.

The behavior with "save file" checked is not what is wanted. I don't want to save the attachment, which is what will happen if "save file" is specified.

Also, "always ask" is NOT specified. That's not the behavior I want either.

Instead, when the "always use this program" checkbox is checked is it presumably supposed to do just that... namely always use the program and not bother to pop up a dialog asking me if I want to use that program, when that's exactly why I checked that box... to just go ahead and immediately always use that program.

And in Options -> Applications, it sure looks like Firefox understood what the checkbox means. It shows MS Word as the program to use, and it shows "(default)" which makes sense as well.

It just doesn't seem to honor this option with the expected corresponding behavior.

    Open not Save

I seem to have skipped reading the part of your original post where you clearly explained that you wanted to open attachments and not save them!

Anyway it seems that you're not the only user with this problem. Some steps taken by another user are outlined here:

    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/935754

Some details around how Firefox handles attachments and possiblr reasons for problems can be found here:

File types and download actions - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

Hopefully it's of some use this time!

Note: I must learn to read carefully....
