Missing emails after Live Mail sync

Hi, I hope you can help. Apologies in advance if I've posted in the wrong area as I'm new here - please redirect me if necessary.

I've been using Windows Live Mail for around three years and have never experienced any major problems, but
today, after closing the program and and re-opening it a few minutes later, a message appeared saying Live
Mail was 'syncing' my accounts. Afterwards, it started to download the exact number of emails I already had in my inbox (over 1,000) but once it had finished, no new emails appeared in the inbox. The same thing happened with my synced gmail account.
Since then, both of the above accounts seem to be working normally, but the entire contents of my two non-Live Mail accounts (including inbox, sent items and drafts) seem to have vanished and I have no idea how (or if it's even possible) to get them back.

Also, on checking the Recycle bin, I found six items that weren't there before and don't know whether it's safe to restore/delete them. Two are "Text Documents" with names starting edb; two are JRS files with names starting with edbres; one is a Recovered File Fragments file and the other is a File Folder called Backup.

Please explain what's happened here and if there's anything I can do to retrieve any of the missing emails.

Hi Wixi, welcome to Seven Forums.
Do you use POP or IMAP ?

Hi Roderunner, thanks for the reply.
I use POP (although the mail server is classified as POP3 in the Accounts properties).

I recently discovered the missing mail from both accounts has somehow been sent to three separate Storage folders, all labeled with yesterday's date. I have no idea how or why they've ended up there and wonder if there's a quick way to move them back to their original locations?

Hi Wixi, first, make sure your 'Storage' folders are visible the open one of them. Highlight one item & right click it & select 'Move to folder'.
If you want all to be moved to the same folder, select NONE then press Ctrl+A which will select them all.

Click the folder you want then OK.

    Hi Roderunner,

Thank you so much! :) The emails have been moved back to their original folders.

Do you know what caused this in the first place, as I've never seen anything like it before and don't remember doing anything out of the ordinary when it happened?

Also, is it okay to delete the strange files that appeared in the Recycle Bin?

Hi Wixi, it could be your not using the latest version of WLM. Get it here. You wont lose anything and nothing will be changed.
Yes the 'Bin' can be emptied.

    Thanks Roderunner.

Just out of curiosity, is there a way to check which version of Live Mail I'm currently using?

    Thank again, Roderunner.

This might sound like a silly question, but following the link you posted earlier, it looks as though I have to download Windows Essentials as whole - do they give an option to download only Live Mail?

    Hi Wixi,

when you download the .exe file, it will give the option to install what you want & update what you have.
If their is any part of it you have installed that you don't want, completely uninstall all of Windows Essentials before reinstalling it.
You will not lose anything or have any changes made to your previously installed programs.
