IE 11 back button not working on windows 7 machine

Hi Guys,
I am using IE11 version 11.0.9600.17105 on a Windows 7 machine. The back button does not work most of the time. I have found many old threads regarding this issue, however my issue is current, I'm wondering if there has been a fix and I have somehow missed it

However the technique described by UsernameIssues is probably the easiest one to use!

I have modified my first post to this thread in the hopes of being clearer about the HOSTS file.

I used the new tab or new window scheme long before this back button issue showed up. I find that it helps me organize the windows that I have open.

Thanks again for your suggestions. I have disabled some of the custom settings listed above by Callender and this has improved the issue with the back button not working. Interestingly the back button still does not work on Mashable's web site www.mashable.com at all. I understand the issue with the back button in IE is a known problem going back several versions, so I am going to mark this issue as resolved.
I have also learned that if you type a message in the message box and click mark as solved before posting, you lose everything you just typed

My guess is that it works as designed. There won't be a fix for it.

Certain websites know/like this design and have presented their adverts in such a way as to be a pain to those that block their adverts. Or maybe I'm just too cynical
