Well I've disabled SSL v3 in Firefox but check this post for better info.

Or if you've made changes try reversing the steps given here for Firefox:

Also just to rule out other problems what happens if you type the URL (website address) into this?

Or just confirm that it shows SSL v3 enabled in your browser - if that's the case then you can rule it out as the cause.

Did you try Internet Explorer? If you get the same problem using any browser then it must be down to something else. Are you using Kaspersky AV at all? I heard that their SSL Scanner is enabled by default and can cause problems on some sites.

Well your system specs say that you use AVG!

What happens if you temporarily disable your firewall - just for test purposes. Disable it and visit a problem site. Does it work? Don't forget to re-enable your firewall.

If your system clock is badly out of sync it could be a problem.

I've read through this thread again and see that I'm asking questions that you've already answered.

The myswinton site definitely has a problem with SSL v3 but the national lottery site doesn't so I'd assume that it's not the problem.

So here's something to try:

What happens if you bypass DNS Lookup and just type the national lottery website ip address into your browser#s address bar? Try Chrome and Firefox.

Important - type https://

make sure that you include the letter "s"

then carry on typing the ip address. It's 194.246.78.102

Press enter.

If it works it indicates a problem with your DNS Lookup provider or your DNS cache.

Edit: I get a different ip address at this time. To check thew current ip address:

Go to START

type cmd.exe

press Enter

type:

ping www.national-lottery.co.uk

press Enter

Use the ip address shown instead.

Just to be clear - Are you saying that typing the ip address into your browser's address bar works and allows you to connect?

If that's the case try the following.

Close any browsers and then open a Command Prompt.

Type:

ipconfig /flushdns

Press Enter.

Try browsing to the site again. If it still doesn't work try:

On your Start menu, open the Control Panel.
Change View settings to "View by category" if it's not the current setting.
Click Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Center, and click Change adapter settings.
Double click your active network adapter.
On the General tab of the Connection Status window, click Properties.
On the General tab of the Connection Properties window, scroll down and select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), then click Properties.
On the General tab of the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window check what's shown. Make a note of any ip addresses displayed. Then select "Use the following DNS server addresses" and then type in the following IP addresseses.

To try NortonDNS

199.85.126.10

and

199.85.127.10

Or if you prefer try GoogleDNS

8.8.8.8

and

8.8.4.4

Click OK and exit all the windows.

Start your browser and see if you can connect to a problem site. If not try resetting your router then rebooting.

Let us know how it goes.

Temporarily turn off ad-blocking. Extensions and Internet security software that block advertising or other unwanted content can cause problems loading webpage content; you may see an error message, The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. (Note that some ad-blocking software add entries to the hosts file that can also cause this error.) You may be able to determine that part of the site has been loaded by selecting "View > Page Source" from the menu.

Intermittent timeouts and failed page loads can be caused by web scanners bundled with certain anti-virus packages that process all HTTP traffic, such as Kaspersky "Web Anti-Virus" and Avast! "Web Shield". (Avast users have reported the error, Connection Interrupted. The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading)

Note:
You may not be able to view a particular website until the cached result expires. Hence the reason for the request to flush DNS cache.
