How to get .eml files into Win 7 Mail

Having used the brilliant "How to enable Windows Mail in Win 7" which I have done a few times on 4 PCs I now would like to get some old but important email which are in .eml format into my new Windows Mail.
Tried the import route and browse to where files are on ext Hard Drive, but keeps barking at me that there are no valid files in this location or files are in use etc.
Would appreciate some help please. I am reasonably PC savvy even pushing on at 80 but this has defeated me.

    Thanks

Welcome to (posting on ) Seven Forums marsid37. Perhaps you can convert them to a format that Windows Mail will import? Since Windows Mail is not supported by 7, other possibilities generally don't apply.

Thank you so much for reply .
I have tried numerous formats , none of which seems to work. I think I can only print the important emails to keep them. But thanks again

.eml files are text files so can be opened with any text editor, e.g. Word Pad or Notepad. To see HTML content change the file to .mht format. A free .eml file viewer is here.

Is Windows Mail set as default in Control Panel>Default Programs>Set Default Programs? In addition select Choose Defaults for this Program, check box for .eml and Save.

Rightclick on an .eml file, select Properties, click the Change button, make sure Windows Live Mail is selected to open the file type.

It has been reported that during copying some .eml files can change their type to ._eml and need to have the file type corrected by right clicking file to select Rename and edit out the _ prefixing eml.

To repair the files en masse go to Control Panel>Programs to click on Windows Live Essentials, select Change, then Repair.

Nothing appears to happen with Windows essentials.

Are you saying you installed Windows Mail from Essentials? Did you confirm it is set as Default Mail and associated with the .eml files in Default Programs as I specified earlier?

No I am saying that I used the " How to enable Windows Mail in windows 7 " which is on this site. There are many like me who missed Windows Mail when we updated from Vista. Windows mail is part of win 7 but is disabled, and of course there is no support for it. And windows mail is my default mail .

Did you ask the tutorial's author in the thread comments, to get expert help?

Did you run the Repair reinstall after setting those two defaults?

I have not asked author of the "how to " to help ... yet.
The problem with running the repair (which I have tried ) is that it repairs files which result in me losing the tweak for Windows Mail which then has to be done again .
