Ok then.... I think I asked you to do this before, but it's probably a good idea to get fresh data after trying other things.

Launch an elevated Command Prompt (right click Run as Administrator...
    reg query "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer" /s > "%UserProfile%\Downloads\regQueryIE.txt"

Please attach regQueryIE.txt to your next post.

I could only find an IE9 base reg file. That should be sufficient to fool Windows.
After I see the reg query output, I'll post the first of two reg files. One is just the main keys for IE, the 2nd one contains all of the IE keys from my install for IE 9. This 2nd reg file might cause a few permissions alerts, not sure.

I still need to look back for any bread crumbs I might have missed - given my propensity for errors on your thread, there might be a few things. I'm going to take my own advice and slow down - check my work. That doesn't mean I won't make another mistake - just fewer of them

Done! Good luck with the bread crumbs.

Breadcrumbs are used to make bread sauce. This goes nicely with roast turkey....
OK ... my weird sense of humour is gettingvthe better of me. I really just wanted to let you both know I'm keeping a watching brief :) not to mention learning a lot!)

    Thanks bengta,
I'm on Win10 at the moment and can't seem to access the text file - can't open it, can't download it.

I'll try again next time I switch back to Win8.1

Now I'm just getting hungry! Roast turkey, bread sauce, mashed potatoes, cranberries, yams ... yum!

I'm glad you're keeping an eye on this - I respect your in depth knowledge and appreciate your sense of humor

I was hoping that switching the update IE flag off would get around this anomoly, but it seems it's deepr than that. If setting IE\main in the registry to IE 9 doesn't fool Windows, then there has to be another key. I don't know what that might be, but the text file bengta provided might provide a clue.

    Ok, it wasn't Win10, it was IE protection mode - sheesh - I couldn't download anything !

I have the output and need a little time to wrap my head around what should be changed. There's an interesting key

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\11.0
    DoNotOfferIE11AU REG_DWORD 0x1

That might have bearing on the issue - don't know yet.

Anyway, I have the IE 9 main key ready to post, but I'd like to see if there's any other IE 11 specific keys like the one above.

Back after more research on the keys. (I'd rather be doing more research in the Keys )

    Thanks,

    Bill

Still on it! It's taking me a while since I'm looking at a number of ways to resolve the issue (that and I keep getting distracted while looking at the registry values - had to start over a few times).

I should be finished by the end of the week -maybe early next week if anything distracts me.

    Thanks for being patient,

    Bill
