Totally irrelevant story regarding the OP's question. No security measures can protect a user from his / her own stupidity.

I totally agree. They don't make a Anti Stupidity Program. Although I think their is a market for one.
Was it stupid or just not well informed? Obviously she was not sufficiently techno savvy to know what "remember me" might entail.

How well does one have to be informed to save a password in some fashion.

You shouldn't need a degree in computer science to understand that a password is something that need to be save by some fashion.
Anybody old enough to suck their thumb knows a password is useless if you don't remember it or store it some safe place you have access to.
One knows that they must keep track of their keys so they can start their car, get into their home or business. They know this without any special training or being informed.
    So I go with stupid.

"Remember me" could translate into her thinking that she would not need to remember the password since it was now in the system.

Pretty much why win-10 and tying an email addresses password to a computers login will not work for a lot of people that have password remembering problems already :/
Except for the twist not being able to log into a computer now :)

But wait a cell number fixes that one right except cell phone contracts are inherently expensive and it's tough to imagine but not everyone has one or also ways have one because of lack of funds.
Loose a cell contract and loose a cell number if not ported to another provider in time before it's closed by the provider.
