New Mail Client

Just thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and sing the praises of Thunderbird.

It's simple, yet it's fast and effective at what it does. In my opinion it's the best client for connecting to POP/IMAP mailboxes.
There's also plenty of useful Addons available for download that makes the experience even better.

However as I said recently in another thread, if you're connecting to an Exchange Server then you can't really beat using the full blown version of Outlook from one of the Office Suites.

Hi,

I have tried for three days to get TB to work with Vista. I am currently using WM and I cannot import my contacts and email into TB Seeing as how you are using do you have any ideas on how to make this transition? WLM sucks and I am updating to Win 7 so I need a new email client.
I downloaded the Add On "Import & Export Tool" but still cannot get the detail over

If you have any ideas please let me know>

I used Windows Live Mail only for a month or so, about 8 months ago, and went to Tbird.

I don't remember all of the details about transferring mail from one to the other. I do remember that it did not go easily and that I eventually exported as LITTLE AS POSSIBLE from Windows Live Mail. If i did not do that, the resulting folder structure in Thunderbird after the import would be confusing.

If you have 50 mail folders in Live Mail and want to get them all into Tbird in one easy transfer, you might be disappointed.

My suggestion would be to consolidate all your Windows Mail into just a few folders, such as sent and saved. Export just those minimum folders to a safe place, install Tbird, and then import just those few folders from the safe place.

That's how I think I did it.

I cannot specifically recall if you can install Tbird and then use it to reach into Live Mail and grab the mail through an import function. I doubt it. I think you have to export FROM Live Mail and then IMPORT to Tbird.

That's all I recall. There may well be other methods that will allow you to deal with dozens of folders, but I ended up with problems when I tried that. Consolidate if you can and then resort things out after you get Tbird up and running.

I actually tried that. I went in and took one folder only and tried to import it. I chose this particular folder as it had only three emails in it and it did not import from WM. I created afolder on my desktop called "Imported Folder" and I imported from there. Nothing happened

What really scares me is if I try TB and do not like then how do I get my detail out of there and back to one of the MS applications?

Should not be this difficult I think it is time Mozilla spent some time on upgrading TB to enable easier migration. Not everyone out there is a computer genuis. This is even more obvious now that Win 7 has no mail client and anyone upgrading will be looking.

Really appreciate the comeback and maybe there will be others that have experienced this problem and will respond through this link.

Windows mail

• Import to Thunderbird: Windows mail stores the messages as .EML files. They are normally stored within the C:\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail directory. If you can't find them look in the Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Maintenance -> Store Folder to find where Windows Mail stored them. You can use the ImportExportTools extension to import .EML files. It lets you select multiple .EML files at the same time.
  Export the contacts using the Windows Contacts program as a .csv file. You can import it using Tools -> Import -> Address books -> Text Files
• Export from Thunderbird: Export the messages as .EML files using the ImportExportTools extension.

Is windows mail still on your pc? If so you should be able to at least open the files from the source directory of windows mail if windows mail does indeed save in .eml format. You should be able to export your contacts as csv and import them.

I downloaded the "Import Export Tools" extension. I created a new folder in TB and went to C:\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail directory. I selected the files to import and the only thing that happened was that all of the folders in the Windows Mail directory duplicated and nothing imported
I then tried just one folder at a time and the same thing nothing imported and the selected folder in Windows Mail duplicated. I had a mess and had to carefully delete all of the duplicates.

I must be missing a step somewhere but not sure where. I need step by step instructions to follow and maybe that will help. If there is someone that has recently gone through this procedure maybe they can provide more detail to see where I am going wrong
