Email alerts/notifications without a mobile phone - possible?

I am in Window 7, Mozilla Firefox and have outlook/hotmail account. I do not have a mobile phone so cannot get email alerts/notifications but am wondering if there is a facility online to do this. I have heard that there can be a ringing sound when you get an email but am not sure whether this would be for outlook/hotmail. Or could there be another facility that shows up whilst online? If so, what do I need to do to put this in place/activate it? (If it involves money then I wouldn't be interested).

Ah I have hit a snag....I went with the email notifier (since it said it was for windows 7). However I didn't complete the download because it wanted to change my default page to Conduit Search Project and was twisting my arm about Bubbledock (some unwanted games) + it has pop up ads (a google search revealed)

I would go with the first link - Howard E-mail notifier except that it downloads to a zip file. My knowledge about zip files is that they are rendered inaccessible and I don't know how to undo that situation.

    Help!!

Yeah I did not download them as I just keep one tab open for my email. I just did a Google search and that's what came up so can't say how they work or if they come with garbage with the download.

If it is a zip file then you would unzip it to a folder then go to folder and run the setup file

Ah I thought it was involved, but it would appear to be quite simple (did a google search). Unfortunately Howard e-mail involves lots of advert services which repel me.

SO.....I am still looking for another email notifier for windows 7 i.e. not Howard e-mail or email notifier (as above).
    Feedback please?
