Do I need Windows Live Messenger with Thunderbird?

I just reinstalled win 7 on my computer to factory specs and I'm a bit confused about whether I have to use Windows Live Messenger seeing as I use the Thunderbird program for my email and I have two email addresses one is Hotmail and the other is Gmail. I'm fairly sure that I didn't have it installed before this, Can I delete it without any problems?

I would not delete it, just in case you decide to change in the future, or you are seriously short of disk space. I would check MSConfig to ensure that it is not being loaded on start-up, but otherwise ignore it

Am using it on w7 & 8.1, Thunderbird needs no extras to work.

    notifications

within Tbird there are a couple of options you can use to notify of new mail.
A sound notification and the icon appearing in your notifications area.
