What is the purpose of chrome.exe in windows 7?

Its an internet browser, like Internet Explorer.

It is not unusual to have multiple instances of chrome.exe. Typically each browser tab representing a different website will have separate instance. Tabs on the same website can share a process. There can be other instances as well.

If you don't recognize that listing it might mean it was added when downloading something else,
Chrome browser comes with several different utilities
Java from oracle
Adobe flash player
Just to name a couple of common ones.
