I am having the exact same issue using IE11 on two desktop computers. It seems to have just started within the last week. I thought it was my computer until I tried another one.

I use Google as my home page. I frequently have to close out IE11 and reopen it to get a Google search to work. But it's hit or miss. I can't believe Google (now known as Alphabet) can't fix this.

PS I just found this Google thread also reporting the problem:

Google probably uses a track search # and if they see a drop they will eventually notice
Not to mention if the issue is reported on Google help might even help more than waiting around until Google notices
It's not that big a deal for me to deal with Google help forums :/

I have to confess that I almost never use IE but have just noticed that default search provider "Google" was not the most recent version.

I had a problem some time ago with Windows Update KB3033814 - see this:

What's blocking Google search from being added in IE11?

Checking IE just now I get the old Google logo in the address bar:

Updated to the latest version and now I get this:
Google search ben does not respond - All browsers-google-internet-explorer.jpg

So Google Search has been updated. I can then turn off instant search and everything works including the Google search button.

So check to see if KB3033814 is installed and remove if found. Reboot and update search provider.

Maybe you don't have the exact same issue but it's worth a check.

Is there a way to send Google a message to fix their foul-up?

Okay more testing after the problem returned!

    Solved (I think) like this:

For IE11 go to "manage add ons" and then "search providers" and make sure that you added Google Search from IE Add Ons Gallery.

On google home page click "Settings" and turn off instant search.

Configure IE not to delete browsing history on exit:

The google preferences cookie is retained and everything works including the "Google Search" button.

Downside: You need to run a third party cookie cleaner for clearing history and specify "cookies to keep"

Other browsers: Same principle applies regarding google search preferences settings and cookies.

    OK THANKS CALLENDER..
I just went directly to Google Home Page and under Settings in the lower right corner I checked "Never Show Instant Results" (skipped all the intermediate steps just to try this one setting first) and the searches appear to now work. As I type in the Google search box, I still get predictive suggestions showing. What did I shut off by changing to this setting, and why would this just start happening out of the blue to numerous computers?

It means that (google preferences) cookies are not saved on browser exit or something cleared cookies externally.

Well beside dealing with google help = not really,
    https://productforums.google.com/for...orum/websearch

A simple workaround is change the url you use to open google search to this,
Then it should work without dealing with google :)
They pretty much have focused more with Chrome and wanting people to use the url search bar in Chrome.
    Code:
    https://www.google.com/

The https url is a good work-around fix for me.

Thanks for the suggestion. Nothing else worked.
