I was happily browsing away with my Firefox 115.5.X (can't find my notes of what the X is) on my Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit machine. Then I noticed 'updater.exe' running when I logged on a few weeks ago. Then a few days after that, I got a popup apparently from Firefox, with the cute fox, telling me I had an update available. And another popup yesterday, without the cute fox, asking me to update.
Then Firefox added a bookmark for me, to my bookmarks, that I could click on to get the update ! I wanted to know what exact version I had of Firefox, so I went to 'help, about' and it started to download the new version, without me agreeing to it !! I x'ed out of Firefox and shut down the whole computer. Started computer up again, and 'so far' do not have any more nags. I can't even find out what version of FF I have !
About a year ago, when I was setting up my Win 7 computer, I checked to see what the latest version of FF would be, that was compatible with my machine, and it was Firefox 15.5 something. I installed it then, and FF has been fine.
I don't want to risk downloading whatever FF wants to download. Why fix what isn't broken right ? What is the benefit, if any? If I decide to use the new version, is it better to download it from the nag prompt, or download from an internet site of my own choosing ?
What is the newest version of Firefox I can run on my 32 bit machine with 2.0 Gig ram and 2.7 Gig CPU ?
I really don't want to break what isn't broken, or go through many hoops just to get back to what I had, if the new version doesn't install right, etc, etc, etc. Headaches.
I see that FF has extended support for Windows 7 into April, 2025, which I suppose is why they are even nagging me to update. Thoughts? Should I download the update? Thanks in advance.

Update: I got tired of researching, and just clicked on the download nag. It tried to download FF 115.17.0 and I got a 'failed, unknown reason' message.
Luckily FF is still working for me. Should I just keep dismissing the nag popup?
Anyone else successfully downloading 115.17.0 ?
Thanks
10/31/2024 update: I went to the Mozilla discussion group, found some other folks with the same problem, and got some good advice to go to a certain address and download an exe file, which fixed my problem !

Just adding this in case one or two fellow travelers have the 115.17.0 problem.
