Using Chrome-Do I need to Update Internet Explorer version?

I see that in January 2016, if I don't have the latest version of IE (which in my case is IE11) installed on my Windows 7 64-bit machine, I won't receive any further IE updates. I have used Chrome as my browser for years now but I do faithfully install the IE updates as apparently even if you don't use IE, it has deep roots into the operating system. Anyway - my question is this.....should I update to IE11? I think my current version is IE8. Or should I attempt to block IE on my system? I gather it's pretty much impossible to totally remove it.
Any help would be most appreciated!

Yes continue to update IE even if you do not use it, it has security updates that if not updated could cause your computer to be at risk.

Thank you Swifty for the reply. From what I've read, it appears the best way for me to update to version 11 would be from the hidden update in my "Windows Update" page? I have both versions 10 and 11 hidden so would just download and install Version 11.

I would un-hide both I.E. 10 and 11 and then check Windows 7 Update again.

My apologies for taking so long to respond, If you go to Internet Explorer and setting then about IE it will bring up a window saying what version you have and if you want to update IE automatically. That would be the easiest way to allow it to do so for you. However yes you can go start and then search "Windows Update" once that opens you should be able to navigate what updates are available to you.
