Use some form of off-line client (Thunderbird is one), and use this to grab all your mails and store an archive Locally, (you can then move them to remote online storage if you have limited local space).
It's possible that someone will take over the service but the old adage of "hope for the best and plan for the worst" is a best choice in this situation
Barman:
Can you recommend a couple of tolerable free web mail services to replace Yahoo if it comes to that?
Other than Google Gmail. I try to avoid Google for anything other than searches.
I use Yahoo only when I have to cough up a throwaway email address to someone and I don't want to give them my Thunderbird addresses for fear of eventually being spammed to death.
Yahoo is generally horrible, but it's bearable for occasional use. I have no idea what Verizon may have in store for them. They could eliminate email entirely for all I know.
Any recommendations for a sane, simple Yahoo replacement where I can have say 2 or 3 free addresses?
I've used Hotmail (now called outlook) for many years. I use it for my "public" e-mail address such as forums, registration for software, etc. Never had a problem with it. It gets a lot of SPAM but I have the SPAM filter set and it intercepts almost all the SPAM.
Thanks Jack.
That's this Microsoft product?
Microsoft account
Questions:
How many addresses does it allow?
Can you change them at will?
What are the aggravations/limitations?
Is the interface and configuration straight forward? That was the worst thing about Yahoo--very difficult to figure out how to alter your setup.
There is one I've used for a number of years - GMX - Not sure what countries it actually supports with TLD's but it dos have a .Com option and is well put together, (based in Germany originally)
www.GMX.com
Edit
It allows the use of @gmx.us for US users
I also have an Outlook.com address but tend to keep that for correspondence and other logins etc with Microsoft
yahoo inbox shows me i have one message but that message is not being shown
i tried both chrome and IE
EDIT forget it i found the message

I don't know about addresses, I only have one. If you already have a Microsoft log in (e.g. if use a Microsoft log in for Win 10) then that is probably what would be used with Outlook.com.
I got the account back in the Win XP days. I was changing ISP's (several times) and getting new e-mail addresses from the ISP's. The Hotmail address at least remained constant. Don't know if new accounts are different.
