Windows 7: Firefox opening windows/tabs

Firefox opening windows/tabs

I started using Firefox and I am looking to keep the open windows to a minimum because on many sites as I'm kind of concentrating on the top menu bar and the open windows, meanwhile on the task bar i can see the FF icon's outline stacking of other windows open but not until i hover over with mouse do i realize all these windows have spun out to the far right and was when one of them was playing over the current video clip i had playing.

Is there a configuration method to tone down the number of links or whatever derives from the current window or video, etc...that interrupts and bleeds over into the current windows desired to be open?

Why don't you use use tabs instead of windows?

Tree Style Tab :: Add-ons for Firefox

With this addon you can move a tab to a new window and vice versa if you want to.

Aslo with multiple windows open try pressing [ALT+TAB] although in my opinion this worls better with Aero disabled.

just change your tabs options in settings,
just tick options 1 and 6.
then you will only get current and URL selected links showing on tabs

Using tree style add on tabs...

Thanks for the tip. I went ahead and downloaded the add-on that you provided and it did add it on real quick, even if I'm not sure i get the gist of it (yet) of how that's going to improve managing open windows or tabs. I'm sure i will pick it up after a few tries or that is, in reading about it as well and trying it out.

But the part of the screen or window (is like your example of the pic./diagram) where the first two tabs are open (yes, Outlook & Seven Forums) with + character below that and then it's kind of blank column space which as far as viewing...seems kind of a waste (There's always some fuss or whatever to everything-right :)
On other you suggest Alt Tab as a procedure on tabs with off-Aero. Do you mean Windows 7 Aero display function(?). And i haven't tried it yet, but as far as the shortcut keys alt tab, does that eliminate or lessen however many additional windows that might open from a present window's links, etc...?

And Thanks
for the other reply to (Roy) Torchwood is a method by which in this case, i wouldn't really use the Tree Add On feat, if to set the url limitation with the selected links?
I have to admit, i'm not really sure what I'm talking about :) yet.

RE: Aero on/ off. It just affects what is displayed when you press [ALT+TAB] to switch windows. You either see each open window in turn (with aero) or a row of icons that can be clicked to open each window (aero disabled)

Would you believe it. I linked Tree Style Tabs but posted Screenshots for Side Tabs. With Side Tabs you can resize the left pane by dragging the edge of the panel with your mouse. You can choose to open new windows or tabs when right clicking links and can convert windows to tabs and vice versa.

Here is the addon used in the screenshots:

Side Tabs :: Add-ons for Firefox

Regarding Tree Style Tabs add on. If it is not what you need just remove it.

RE: Limiting how many windows open. Set browser to always open links in a new tab if you don't want or need multiple windows.

Sorry but I don't have latest FF installed with new style preferences. If you can find this option in the new style prefernces window - try it.

Pardon my intrusion.
All the advice offered so far is quite sound.

So, perhaps I misunderstand the OP's original question.
There is a simple setting in the General settings tab (as mentioned by @Callender) that ***I think*** will address the original problem without the need for installing additional add-ons?
There are two reasons I suggest this:
  1. The obvious one: Occam's Razor
  2. Tab-related extensions/add-ons are notorious for wreaking havoc on one's Fx performance, especially if there are more than one installed -- they tend to easily conflict with one another and "break" performance.
    1. I do not know what -- if any -- "Tab" add-ons the OP might have already.
    2. But I try to minimize them in any Fx profile, to minimize the chance of problems.
Anyway, I've attached a screen cap from the current version of Fx, default theme, from my Win10 box.
#3 refers to another option which the OP might wish to enable.

I hope this helps.
I apologize if I misunderstood the original question.

@ MoxieMomma

Thanks. That's the setting needed (I think)

As far as I can work out the OP is complaining about the number of open windows. I can't figure out if lots of open windows are actually required for some reason or if indeed using tabs instead will suffice.

You are most welcome, of course. I'm glad I could help (I think).

The other nagging question for me: why so many open Windows or tabs?

Firefox, like most browsers, will "take" as much available RAM as it can.
With many, many open tabs or Windows, it may start to become a bit of a resource hog, slowing down both browsing and overall performance (especially on a system with less-than-robust hardware).
Eventually, the memory leak might lead to a Fx crash.
Depending on the user's settings, the entire browser session might be "lost" and hard to recover.

I do a LOT of internet research while using productivity apps (Word, PPT, Excel, Snagit, etc.).
Even on my robust systems with tons of RAM, I tend not to keep more than 10 or 12 open tabs in Firefox.
I bookmark the others and return to them later, as needed.

Just my random thoughts, as usual.

involuntary tabs / windows

Hi MM,
Thanks for your most welcome input to my issue of the windows and tabs that seem to open when i 'go to' certain web sites and i say that because not every site will include these multi-windows that seem to creep up or without knowing about it until a swift scroll to the FF icon reveals...dang--a strand of open windows that make up 'advertisements' of course and sometime there's 2 of the same ads or commercials. So, my point in getting more control over the browser to prevent that from happening if i can.
In IE11, one thing i liked of a Win. 7 tweak was getting the preview from task bar's open windows when hovering over, you know, and it was one of these timed settings that it would open faster upon a swift hovering-over w/the mouse, and for whatever reason, made it more hit and run-like, to be able to kind of wipe out the windows opening and have a cleaner yard. Or desktop :)
So, that's my objective to kind of find various options and it looks like there's a few according to Callendar and another Roy who answered with a try-out suggestion of Alt Tabbing and i believe that puts up a limitation of allowance for it or those particular tabs to get a better handle on or over if that makes more sense?

Meanwhile thanks again and it sounds like you kind of maintain a whole factory of webpages and the like :)

Part II
Hey Callendar and MM, thanks again. I didn't realize there was more response from your continuation to mine after i tried the side Tree Tab process and i went ahead and disabled it just to practice that as well and accordingly, i like what you guys are already explaining and i can likely wrap all this up by continually learning the browser as for instance, the set tabs instead of windows.
The part of set to open in new tab to prevent further windows sounds like that's an up shot on my next move. And this sounds like a zig zag and sorry for my kind of not too brief going here, but i didn't want to lose a current search engine's windows of links upon finding a particular search and i thought that if i didn't hit the open new window, the current search window would be gone and i'd have to go back in, type a new question and resume yada yada and of course, one of you or another kind suggestion was to just flip the control key (or one of those...anyway, i can better do it by typing then think of it) but that will, of course, hold the original search window while opening another to try the selected link.
Anyway, i think i'm making progress and THANKS you guys and gals and Win 7 Forum and all that:) too.
