Do continual looping YAHOO 'clips" run when not on that TAB?

Y'all don't care, but background - been running Firefox on 'everything - including a Win XP machine - and another Lenovo Cetrino with Win 7 Ultimate - both with 4 gig mem - , and firefox seems sluggish ( duh anyway). It has become obvious that I need a slimmed down browse. But, and So, I was curious, Take for instance a Yahoo page with those annoying little clips that automatically run ( some continuously Loop which is really irritating ) as you scroll down the page.
->Do those things run ( ie polluting the ethernet, using processing cycles) even when you've moved to another tab but left yahoo tab open? How could you tell? If so, that's got to be slowing up firefox ( and other browsers) processing that, ummm , stuff.
-> And why do they automatically run ( forced down our throats) as one scrolls down the page. they're not "ads" just newsy clips, that f I were interested in, would 'click on'.

ah - advanced edit ..
