Firefox, wait to go to new window/tab is gone ?

In earlier versions of Firefox I could set my options to wait before going to a new page on a web site. FF waited until I clicked. That way I had the chance to decide if I wanted to go to that page, or another part of a web forum. Sometimes it helped me to not get hit by malware.

I cannot find that under FireFox 56.x options anymore.

Is this gone forever ? I did look in FF extensions, and didn't find anything. Of course, my search fu doesn't always work and I may have used the wrong search terms.

I searched for 'Ask before open new window', 'ask before start new window', and the same for tabs.

Any suggestions would be a tremendous help.

    Thanks !

Check the left hand side of the browser.

I have already looked multiple times through Tools -> Options and not found it, before I posted.

Customize Firefox doesn't have anything in those menus either.

Somewhere on the left side there is a setting. I lot my tabs and got them back that way. Did you try updating or reinstalling Firefox?

    Hi JJ,

Have you ever used about:config? There is a setting that may help: browser.tabs.warnOnOpen, mine is set to true. If you check and yours is set to false all you have to do is double-click on the entry to change it to true.

       Tip
Remember how you did this in case you want to revert your changes, if any.

This will explain how to open about:config If you think it will help, bookmark the about:config page/tab for quicker access.

Start typing tab in the search bar. You'll see the list populate as you add letters.

Scroll almost halfway down until you see,

If yours happens to be false double-click on the entry to change it to true. Test.

You may want to revert back if you don't like the changes or there is no discernible difference.

This may or may not help. Under General/Tabs. I like mine set this way you may want to try unchecking and test.

I've looked around and an explanation of warnOnOpen is hard to find, there's a glut of warnOnClose.

Mine is set to true, and I don't have the check box checked.

The setting to hold the switch to another window or tab, was in Options, but apparently has been removed by Mozilla.

In earlier versions of FF, there would be a bar at the top of the window saying 'Allow ?'. And until that was clicked, the browser waited. It didn't open the window/tab until then.

Since that doesn't appear anymore, is there a way to increase the wait time before the new window/tab opens ? Currently it is about 3 to 5 seconds. I would like to make it over a minute.

The allow/deny pop-up should still be there, I see it occasionally.

You should be able to increase the time through an add-on:
    Open Link in Silent Tab
    Tab Suspender

    And FF search
Change the search parameters to find more on tabs and what they can do.

The open link in silent tab works... if I'm logged in and use tabs to go to a new part of a forum. It does wait.

I haven't seen the allow button for a new window popup since about version 30 to 40 of FF. I know its not in the 50.x versions.

Glad to hear one of those works; I don't know JJ I'm at v56.0.2 an like I said: I see it occasionally. I do notice it less and less and I can't find an about: permissions tab anymore.

You know about the about:config tab, do you know about about:about ? Paste that in your address bar and enter, it's a shortcut to some of the less glamorous pages behind the scenes in FF.
