I can't get .url extension to associate with Firefox

    Brink,

Need a little help with Firefox which is my default browser, I can't get the .url extension to associate with it. HTM & HTML I was able to change but for .url Firefox is not a choice. When I browse to the ff.exe to change program, it won't add so I can't complete the change. All my desktop shortcuts open properly in FF but the icons are just blank. I tried making everything default IE, reboot then change back to FF but no success. Can you push me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

Hello Jeff, and welcome to Seven Forums. :)

Have you already tried the method in Option 2 below to set Firefox as the default program for the .url file extension?

Yes I have, that's my problem. Firefox is not a choice as a default program (see attached screenshot). I browse to Program Files\firefox.exe and click open but it doesn't populate as a program to 'open with'.

Click on the arrow to the far right of "Other Programs" to see if it may expand open to see any available programs to hopefully be able to select Firefox.

Is Firefox listed in "Set Default Programs" below to be able to click on "Set this program as default"?

If not, have you already tried to reinstall Firefox to see if it may make it available to select?

I tested this out on my system, and .url files open with Firefox by default when Firefox is set as the default app. I'm using the new Firefox 57 released today though.

As a test, download and merge the .reg file for the listed url item in the tutorial below, and restart the computer to see if that may fix this for you.

I was able to merge the .url reg but same result. I too now have Firefox 57, that was one of my 2 clean re-installs I performed. Before this issue arose I had FF55 32bit, I then upgraded to FF56 64 bit then FF57 64 bit. I'm sure it's a registry issue but I'm not verse or comfortable enough to go into regedit and poke around.

Fixed it! I found a little utility program that did the trick. It's called FileTypesMan. You should check it out and add it in your tutorial.

Opened the utility, did a search for .url then right clicked and chose in the context menu 'Replace File Type for Selected Extension'.... browsed to 'FirefoxHTML' clicked ok and closed utility.

Went back to control panel> Default Programs> Set Associations.... clicked on the .url extension and Firefox was now a choice available.

All done! This program can be used for icon fixes and other file type issues. Check it out at: FileTypesMan - Alternative to 'File Types' manager of Windows

Thanks for the hand holding Brink.
