Can I Make gmail the Default ???

Is there any way to make gmail the default email program ?

On web-pages, I click a button that says "send e-mail" or somesuch; and, after a bit, an Outlook (as best I remember) window opens.

I have never gotten any further than that; I always just X it away and abort the mission.

Also, many of my photo editing programs have an e-mail button; there seems to never be an option to choose a particular e-mail program; the photo program will either tell me that I do not have mail set up, or that silly Outlook window appears.

I found a dated article that shows how to change the default e-mail in the registry by replacing whatever it says with either FireFox...., or Chrome........
I really cannot fathom how that could work, as both FireFox and Chrome (and my other browsers) associate with my gmail so long as I have a gmail tab opened in said browser.

Thanks for reading and all help is appreciated.

    Thanks for finding that.

Although I haven't put it to the test yet, I think that may possibly have solved one side of the situation, associating the little "email us" buttons with my gmail; of course, this part of the equation is browser related.

Now, I just need to figure out how to make the "send photos in email" button in the photo editing programs to associate with gmail.

I did find this (scroll to the last post; the part about changing a registry key):

howto set up gmail as my default email client on Windows 7 - [Solved] - Windows 7

Before I mess something up, does anyone know if that would do the trick ?
