Finally managed to do the Restore after searching online. I had to do it in Safe Mode as there was no other way to make Zone Alarm would allow System Restore to work properly.
So far most of the basic programs are working ok and Safari seems to launch properly again and there is no mess in the keyboard layout when typing with more than one browser and other programs open. But won't be sure yet as I have to install most Windows updates and other applications I need for everyday use.
Just wanted to know what could have caused this. I am inclined to think it is related to the installation of Zone Alarm but I could see why or how. Is there a way to find or see when my registry is being changed or a way to protect it from being affected by a firewall/antivirus program?

Install one program at a time, use it and be sure that is not the problem. Then install the next.

Unless your are truly in love with your A/V and firewall, change it. You feel that it may be the cause of the problem, and yet these things are necesssary. I suggest you do one of two things.

1 Change your A/V, to one that is know to be compatible with Win 7, I suggest MSE, Microsoft Security Essentials. Its free from the Microsoft site and is a combined Firewall and A/V. Its know to work with 7, many are using it.

2 If you want to keep what you have. I would suggest that you start a new Post, the security section of this forum

Whatever, you decide I am glad that I was able to be of help. Most of all enjoy.
