How do some sites allow you to see some pages sometimes. One thread i was reading i cannot now see. limited number of pages maybe. I would now have to log in and not a member. The thread is not in my history and i tried changing IP with VPN and user agent

    How do they do that?

I don't know if I know the answer to your question but what happens when you can't access a page- error, message, etc.?

Forums can easily control who can see what. So can other websites.

More than likely the thread that you cannot now see, but could see previously, has been either, deleted or moved somewhere that you do not have permissions to view, this is often, but not always, due to illegal/inappropriate posts or content

Some Forum moderators will move posts to different parts of the forum, or to more suitable sub-categories of the Forum. Then the thread you are reading will be located at a different web address, and not at the web address retrieved by your browser cookie.

Some sites remove threads altogether from their support Forums after they have stopped providing support for that article.

it is not deleted. yes it is where i have not permission to view. but i was viewing it when it suddenly became not viewable. i did not do anything illegal or innappropriate. i am just curious how do they change it from being available to non available.

Apparently uregd people can view for a while but how do they know it is the same person if you change ip and change user agent. is it a fingerprint?

Forum administrators have the option of restricting forums to certain groups and even user. They can also lock threads to prevent editing from regular users. I can't answer how. It just a setting built into the software. If you want to know why you will have to contact the admins of the forum.
