Windows 7: Desperate need of Firefox Master Password help.

Okay, a password cracker is not going to help here since you already know the password, so cracking it is pointless. What you could try doing is looking in your shadow copies for an older, working version of the key4.db file. That file is in your Firefox profile folder and it stores your passwords.

Do this verbatim as I write this.

Download and install Everything.exe. Downloads - voidtools

In Everything.exe look for key4.db. There may be a bunch, but the one you're looking for is in the path
C:\Users\"your username"\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
It's in that profile folder. Right click the key4.db and open its path withen Everything.exe. Now copy and paste the key4.db file to your desktop for safe keeping.

Now do the same thing and look for cert9.db. It's in your Firefox profile. Copy it to your desktop for safe keeping.

Those two files are responsible for your passwords.

Run ShadowCopyView.

Find an older shadow copy and click on it in the top box. They are listed by date. See my image.

Now in ShadowCopyView search for your profile in the bottom box after clicking on an older shadow copy. You have to double click C drive and go all the way through to the users folder, etc, etc. The same path as was in Everything.exe. You are looking for the two files key4.db and cert9.db. When you find each one, right click and copy them to a folder on your desktop. DON'T copy directly to the desktop otherwise you'll over write your backups.

Now once you have found older copies of key4.db and cert9.db, paste those in your current Firefox profile replacing what is there.

If all done right, hopefully your master password will work. If not, you may have to use an even older shadow copy.

You may need to turn on show hidden folder and show extensions. To do that go to the control panel | folder options and see my image.

F22 Simpilot,

Sorry it me so long to get back to you as I spent all day/nite yesterday researching & trying the info you guys sent me.

Here's my plan:
Organized all critical passwords so now at least I can get into sites I use daily.
Downloaded/Installed keepass, set up a csv as prescribed, however csv is grayed out?? Tried to get on their forum (source forge) to no avail, sent them & email for help.
When I get keepass up & working, try an "out or the box" tactic below.

Desktop PC is a clone of my laptop, copied the profile folder to an 256 gb sd disc.
Then will copy the PC profile folder over the one on my laptop. What do I have to loose???
If this doesn't work unstall Firefox on PC, import passwords from keepass.

You guys have been so helpful to me, please accept the Superman Award below:

F22 Simpilot,

You mentioned you used KeePass for passwords. I downloaded/installed 2 versions below:
1] Main Window Screenshot KeePass 2.42 (2.42.1) released
2019-05-01 14:46. Read More

2] KeePass 1.37 released
2019-01-02 14:16. Read More

For what ever reason I could not open the KeePass csv file I created in Excel. The cvs option was grayed out in both versions. In #1 above, went thru some cattiwampuse steps came up with this file: "Database.kdbx" Still the csv was grayed out in the File Menu??

Then, followed a link on KeePass site, landed at Source Forge ??? filled out the "join form", went to what I thought was the KeePass Forum, did not find a method to post a question about importing a csv file to KeePass. Links I used below:

Free Open Source Windows Desktop Environment Software
KeePass download |

I don't know how many csv files I created in Excel & imported to other programs. I have csv files dating back to the 80's & can easily import into to WORD, EXCEL, DBF software.

I'll look for more straight forward info on the web.

Regards & Thanks a lot.
