    Mozillazine closing?

The owner of Mozillazine, the bible of Mozilla help desks and keeper of the Mozilla Knowledge Base, is thinking of closing the site, because he no longer has time to run it. I've been there almost since the beginning and I had Netscape before that. I have friends there, and it's the best place devoted only to Mozilla products:

There is some hope that some of the more savvy users can continue the work in a new forum. If anyone here can help set up another site, please go over there and help out.

I'm almost willing to host it myself, but I'd have to update my hosting plan. And that forum is using a very old version of phpBB. I use phpBB myself and I could update that site.

Can you help? That website is priceless to all Mozilla users, and even SeaMonkey, Pale Moon and Waterfox, which are no longer strictly Mozillian. And 100 times better than the sad mozilla.org forums.

Is hosting a site by yourself a huge job? I don't really know what's involved.

Yes, especially with security. I saw a few posts there indicating others knowing how to use phpBB and one commentator mentioned the Network for Education and Research in Oregon which would be ideal.

    Edit-

Looks like he's already using the Network for Education and Research in Oregon.

I don't understand this maintenance thing he's talking about. He didn't even update phpBB for years. His Apache is very old and PHP version as well. He's also got a ton of CVEs for the server. And finally he's not even using a free Cert from Lets Encrypt. That would be better than nothing.

    Edit-

The other factor is he's got a copyright and I'd need to take that over.

As of now he's archived things I guess. One could simply create another forum for this type of content. That I might be willing to do rather than import a massive database and then updating phpBB without any issues. I've seen many people on the phpBB forum where when they try to update phpBB 3.0 to the current and it ends up being a PITA. This is why I always update. And I just did that this week with my own forum.

Not my field of expertise, but the site has done very well despite the old phpBB. And it's always been maintained by just one person. I think Alex, who now runs (pardon the expression) Reddit help-desk for Waterfox, was an admin for awhile.

It's the only place you can go to tweak your css code to customize your Moz programs. I once had a mod there spend a week with me straightening out my Thunderbird accounts because I was a new user.

Would you want to contact Kerz and offer your services? Or do you know of anyone?

    What forum do you run?

I don't know how forums work, under the hood. Would you have to consult with Kerz first?

You already have a ready-made collection of Moz experts there, who have been at the site about 20 years each. And a huge list of members. Would you just have to post a sticky at Mozillazine?

Your own forum is similar to this one, but more hardware- than software-oriented. Do you and Agent Smith run it alone? I like your software--no social networking garbage.

And it's very noticeable by its absence here too.
