Can we upgrade MS Edge past version 109?

Hello!

Last version of Microsoft Edge for Windows 7 is 109.0.1518.140 If we manually download a newer version, the installer checks Windows and stops installation because newer versions only work in Windows 10 and 11. I was wondering if there is anyway to trick the installer that we have Windows 10 so we can upgrade to a higher version. I remember the good old MS DOS days that you could trick an application that you have a different MS DOS version. Not a really big deal right now, but eventually we might face compatibility issues if we are stuck in version 109.

PS: Could we copy-paste the relevant files from Windows 10 or 11? I am not 100% sure, but I think you can do that with Firefox if you copy-paste the files into the same folders.

The real answer to this question lies in why it doesn't "support" Win7. Many times Microsoft simply puts an artificial limitation on a program that would otherwise work normally (just to bump usage numbers on newer versions), but there are a few times that the program does indeed require the new version, for example if it uses newer functions or an improved API.

In the case of Google they don't do that that often, but it's not unseen either, and searching about the topic just landed in the notices threating Windows 7 support discontinuation, but without any concrete reason behind. Since Edge is nothing but a Chrome clone, it inherits the same limitations as well as features, and Google doesn't gave anything more to work with. So I'm not really sure of the real reason of that limitation, being technical or political. I guess trial and error is the way to go.

Your suggestion seems the most sane approach, just install on a Windows 10 computer somewhere (maybe a virtual machine) and copy the files over to Win7, so you bypass the installer limitation. In normal conditions, Chrome does work by simply copying the files, like the vast majority of software. There is a chance that further versions do in fact work normally on Win7, at least until they begin to use a Win10-only API call if they're not doing it right now.
Unfortunately I don't have any more concrete answer than this.
