Whenever I encounter unusual problems, I disconnect from the internet and run my anti-virus software.

Go into msconfig and disable all programs running at startup time except the absolutely essential programs. Reboot, reinstall, problem gone?

Maybe the problem came from the Firewall because Outpost firewall causes crash for Firefox and IE!If you use it you must configure it again..

Glad to hear that Firefox is now working.

It's too late now, but you might want to take a look at the XMARKS add-on to minimize the pain if another disaster strikes (and also to sync your bookmarks and passwords between different computers and browsers).

I use the bookmark sync portiion thereof to keep my bookmarks synced between Firefox and IE which I'm occasionally forced to use by Microsoft. I was hoping with the european freedom of browser choice forced upon them by the European Union would bring us some relief here.

Again, it won't help you recover what was lost, but the add-on FEBE will back up everything and allow you to restore FF to that configuration. Works with with profiles, passwords, bookmarks, pretty much everything. That's what I used when I recently went from XP to a new Win 7 machine. Worked like a charm.

The bookmarks are in json type file and if you can find any in your backups or maybe the Recycle Bin just do an import bookmarks and select the json file.
