annoying invoking of Live Messenger

Hi Guys,

Wherever I'm checking Hotmail the Live Messenger (WLM) starts.

I am not using it. I'm using alternative messenger(s)
All MS Add-ons are disabled in both IE8 (32 & 64 bit)

So how to stop that annoying thing?

I was reading somewhere that in win 7 x64 you have to set Vista compatibility mode for WLM, but that was during win7 beta testing.

Is it still the case?

So how can one to stop that from happening?

Thanks in advance for the advice

This is the way to do it. Originally posted by Jonathan Kay.

Greetings,

This is a feature actually. When you visit Hotmail, they use Messenger to display whether or
not your hotmail/e-mail contacts are online. If Messenger isn't running, it starts up
automatically to provide this "feature".

That said, you can block this from happening in Internet Explorer itself. To do so, open up
Internet Explorer and choose the Tools menu. Then if
you're using IE7, choose Manage Add-ons and Enable or Disable Add-ons. If you're using IE8,
just choose Manage Add-ons.

Show the entries that run without requiring permission and the specific entry you'll want to
disable is "Windows Live", which corresponds to the \Program Files\Windows
Live\msgsc.14.0.8089.0726.dll file and CLSID/Class ID is
{E1771B7F-98BE-407F-BA67-AA16ADA5D0C5}. You may need to show the various columns to find the
exact one (there will be multiple 'Windows Live' entries). In IE8 you can also double-click
each entry for the full information to show.

After you've found it, choose the button to Disable it and Messenger will no longer be
started by any Microsoft websites. Be aware however that if/when Messenger is updated, this
may be need to be done again (and will be a different file and CLSID). Additionally you may
want to disable any other "Messenger" items listed, depending on what you have installed.

Thanks Bill2,

That worked

Just curious why that "feature" was implemented for IE8 32bit only?

There is no such add-on in 64bit version and WML remains silent when hotmail checked from within IE8-64... hmmm

My regards

Hi cspencerjr

Are you sure that you followed the instruction and found
msgsc with CLSID ={E1771B7F-98BE-407F-BA67-AA16ADA5D0C5}
(the version can be different though)

I'm never bothered again

Cheers!
