On the contrary, the thread is not useless as you have learned everything you thought you knew about the Microsoft release cycle and the basics of modern OS's was completely wrong.

Wow, this thread sure has gone off course. Here's an opinion from someone who is much older than 15 or 16, and has been working on computers since the days of Windows 3.1, which really wasn't that long ago.

I like Windows 7; its a huge improvement over Vista (I really don't think its that much better than XP, though). However, due to compatibility issues, some of us still rely on XP to perform our daily tasks. I use my personal laptop at work and although many of the applications here will run on Vista or 7, they run very badly on those OS's. We have no choice but to continue with XP if we want to be productive in our jobs. As much as I would like to switch to 7 exclusively, it isn't going to happen until our vendors upgrade their applications to run better on Vista or 7.

Also, I haven't seen it mentioned in this thread, but XP is 4 years away from being totally dead. Microsoft is still supporting it until 2014. Windows 7 could be replaced by then, but unless some major flaws are uncovered, I have a feeling it will be around for quite some time.

I guess the point I was trying to make is that XP is still widely used in the corporate world and won't be going away any time soon. The cost is simply too high for companies to upgrade every PC in their businesses. Not only that, but they still reliy on applications that are not compatible with 7 and they will never consider upgrading to an OS that causes all of their current software to become useless.

Even in XP mode? I only have one software application I had to run in XP mode [e-Sword] and it runs just like it did with XP-Pro, with no noticeable difference.

Yes, even in XP mode. I tried everything to get this one particular application to run better under Win 7 and it just wasn't happening. It just so happens that this one application is the main application that the whole business depends on.

Its not that big of an issue, though. I have my laptop set up in a dual boot (XP and Win 7 x64) configuration and I switch back and forth periodically. I use XP when I'm at work. At home or elsewhere I use Win 7.

By the way, I think Microsoft is making a mistake by not making IE9 available for XP. But I think it may be available for XP at some point. Like I said before, many corporations will still be using XP for years to come and will scream and complain loudly for the better security IE9 will likely provide. MS will probably cave in since a large part of their profits come from the corporate world.
