IE 8 and WLM will not open

I have a new computer with windows 7. I don't know if I have a bum computer, but I have already had the 'black screen' and this morning I logged on and IE8 and WLM won't open.

I clicked on WLM and it opens enough to see my folder panes on the left, but the little circle keeps circling and nothing else downloads.

For IE 8, I click the icon from my QL bar, the circle appears, but it doesn't open and then the circle stops.

I am able to access them both with safe mode with networking. This happened the other day and I reset IE per another post in internet options>advanced tab etc. That fixed the problem. However, since it has recurred, it's obviously a temporary fix.

I can access firefox no problem.

Any ideas? I'm ready to throw this computer out the window!

    Welcome

If it works in safe mode, a clean boot will probably help you find the specific problem

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Couple of things that come to mind.

    1) Try turning off UAC, then run IE/WLM.

    2) Try running the two in compatibility mode and as administrator.

    What is UAC?

Is this something that I should have to do on a computer that I have had for less than a week? I am computer literate. I don't understand how I can have so many problems with a spanking new computer. I don't know if it is my computer or Windows 7 causing these problems.

    sparksals,

UAC stands for User Account Control. It is a security feature which lets users do routine tasks as standard users and non-routine ones as administrators without having to keep switching users or logging off and on. I'm sure somebody can explain that much better than me but this is what comes to my mind right now. You can also google and read reams and reams on the subject.

To disable UAC, go to Control Panel, System and Security, Action center, then click on "Change User Account Control Settings". Move the slider all the way down to "Never Notify". To re-enable UAC later, move the slider back to its current position.

Well, the plot thickens. I tried what you suggested, Bill. It won't let me click 'change user account control settings". I click and nothing happens. Then, Action Center froze. Went to Task Manager and many instances of user account control were running, so I ended each process. Got an error message for Action center that the process needed to end, ended that. Then got a Remote procedure call error message. I can't give the exact error b/c when I came here to add to my post, the error disappeared.

What the hell is going on with this computer? I bought it at Costco. Should I return it for a new one? I just don't believe I should have to go through all these hoops on a brand new computer.

Is this all because of bugs with Windows 7?

ETA: Will try a clean boot later tonight as I'm cooking easter dinner right now.

    Sparksals,

Start your computer in safe mode. For this, restart and keep tapping F8 while the computer restarts. Then, in the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight the safe mode option, and then press ENTER. Log on with a user account that has admin privileges. If everything runs fine in safe mode, the problem probably has to do with a faulty driver or program.

The second option is to create a new user account as administrator and see if things work properly.
For this, click on Start button, click Control Panel, then click User Accounts. Click on Manage another account. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Then click on Create New Account, type the name you want to give to the account, click an account type, and then click Create Account. Now logon into the new account and check if the problems recur.

I will give those a try.

I have already gone into safe mode and my email works no problem there. I could not access user account control in SM though. I will try creating a new user account to see if that works.

I do know that I have not been receiving emails. My mom emailed me twice, I emailed her asking if she got my messages. She got mine, I didn't get hers. It seems I have missed many emails and it's not b/c of my settings.

It took me awhile to also figure out my Blackberry and Win7 are not compatible for email sync. I couldn't understand why I wasn't getting emails on both or that they would delete from my BB despite never having a problem before I swapped computers.

*I think I have resolved this*

I have to add something else this fiasco. I went to gmail today to check my calendar. I don't use gmail very often, but upon logging in, my missing messages for one account were in there. .. all my personal emails and facebook notifications that I had not been receiving.

I don't understand it b/c it wasn't until I got the new computer did i start having problems receiving email. Prior to the new computer, I received messages on my blackberry and outlook express no problem. Now, messages are going to the gmail account, yet I never set it up to forward.

I have google sync on my blackberry which I use for my calendar. I synced last week and that is when it seems to tie in to the problems with not getting my mail.

I just don't understand what is going on here. Things are happening that I haven't set to occur. The only common denominator is when I got the new computer.

Have you heard anything like this happening? Messages mysteriously going to gmail?
