    Windows Live Mail

When I try to click on an email on a website, the following comes up: Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed.

I'm not a young man, so I need baby steps. Just bought a laptop but before that I had a hard drive. Now I have a laptop and using Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail. Is there an easy step-by-step procedure I can take to repair this?

    Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.

When you click on an email link on a webpage, W7 will open the email
program that has been assigned to be the default program for "mailto:"
    links.

How do you normally send/receive email?

Hi HalifaxCanada, welcome to the forums,

I suspect that your problem is with the wonderful way in which Windows Live Mail often "forgets" to set itself as the default mail program, now i can think of many programs that I wish did that but my mail client isn't one of them.

    as requested, baby steps:
    1) Open Windows Live Mail
    2) press the Alt key on your keyboard, then click Tools>Options in the menu that appears at the top
    3) at the bottom of the window that pops up there should be something which says "Windows Live Mail is NOT your default Mail handler
    4) click "Make Default"
    5) Click OK and exit WLM

    that should hopefully fix it

Go to search (by the start button), type the word default, go to default programs. Once in defaualt programs, go to set default programs. Make sure that your mail client is set up as default. If it is, let us know, I will help you reinstall, so that it works properly.

    Hello !!

I believe the default Program might have messed up.

To make your browser and other Windows applications use Windows Live Hotmail or Hotmail as your default email program:
    • Start Internet Explorer.
    • Select Tools | Internet Options from the menu.
    • Go to the Programs tab.
    • Make sure Windows Live Mail or Hotmail is selected for E-mail.
    • Click OK.
To set up Windows Live Hotmail as your default Windows Vista / Windows 7 email program:
    • Download the Registering Hotmail with the Default Programs tool.
    • Launch the RegisterHotmail program.
    • Click Register Windows Live Hotmail with Default Programs.
    • Click OK.
    • Now click Set Windows Live Hotmail as the default (current user).
    • Click OK again.
    • Close Register Hotmail with Default Programs.
Note that Windows Live Hotmail will open in Internet Explorer regardless of your default browser.

Edit: Oops I'm was very late !!

    Hope this helps,
    Captain

I am so happy that I was able to help. The happiness that you felt when your problem was resolved was no greater than my satisfaction because I was able to be part of the solution.

This procedure worked for me after I upgraded from Vista to Win7. However after I reinstalled Win7, it now tells me that the file is only intended for Vista. Anyone know if Microsoft doesn't want to let us designate Hotmail as our default mail service?
