How To Lose Your IE Favorites

To both my friends and new members, do not make the mistake that I did.

I have my favorites in about 25 folders. I have vacation favorites, computer favorites, investment favorites and so on. Well, I wanted to change the name of one of my folders; the change that resulted was the name that I wanted with a corresponding loss of all the favorites in that folder, which no longer worked.

Bottom line, do not change the name of a favorites folder unless you want to lose the favorites.

If I have helped only one, this post was worth the effort.

That's funny, I've renamed favorites folders in IE7 (not IE8, I use Firefox now) and never had that happen. Wonder if it was one of those incidents where the computer/software just completely spazzes out and does something totally wacko...

Anywho, perfect example of why I use Xmarks.

I just tried that. Renamed a top level favorites folder in the left pane of Explorer. The shortcuts in the right pane refreshed but came back right away.

    1) Try searching for favorites via windows search. Unless you have deleted stuff, you should be able to locate them. Type "shell:favorites" without quotes in the Search or Run box, hit Enter.

    2) Try a system restore. If you image your system regularly, you can also restore from a recent image.

Thanks for everyones input. I was posting just for the benefit of others. There were only 4 favs in that folder and I have my favs backed up. So no problem here, just trying to avoid a problem, there.
