IE8 "Cannot display this web page" and similar errors on some pages.

Hi, Only recently started using Win7 and IE8. (I moved from XP doing a fresh install on a new HDD.)

    IE8 is bugging me.
on some web pages, pictures or the little "3rd party adverts" posted around the website do not display.
As per the attached screen dump.
I get explorer cannot display this web page messages and / or little red crosses in an empty box.
I tried the tools options to set the "compatability view" up.
On the IMDB page example i attached, that worked and the pictures and all displayed properly, this was by adding the web page to the compatability view list. In light of this i checked the option "display all web pages with compatability view".
But this does not globally solve the problem.

I searched via google for ""AVS forum" i clicked on the web link presented by google results and got an error message saying explorer cannot display this webpage and a "Diagnose connection problems button".
On clicking the diagnose button i get a window with a green scrolling bar, then another sort of failure window saying something like "explore other options".
I click on that option and then the webpage i wanted appears in the background behind all the windows i have open. This happens on other sites too and the compatability options make no difference.
My internet connection is a cat5 to my modem and i've never had any problem with it before so i'm convinced i'm not loosing connectivity.

Compared to my XP set-up, this problem is either a problem with IE8, windows 7 or that I am now running AVG 9 (Free version) compared with Avira on my old set-up.

Problems with simply navigating the web were the least i was expecting an issue with when i changed to Win7.

Note that i also tried installing the latest Firefox and that didn'tt display the pictures in websites that i sampled either (just like the IE8 issues) so i gave up on that.
Then i tried Google Chrome, with that i navigated to the BBC news website and it just displayed a page of text only, like it had some kind of "do not display pictures in web pages" setting by default.

Anyone help me please?? This is so frustrating, especially the "diagnose connection" problem and then it decides to display it afterall.

AVG can be the cause of your problem. Remove it and use MSE instead:

well i tried disabling AVG to start with, that has made no difference to either some pages not displaying images correctly or some pages failing to load with a "diagnose Connection" problem being the only result.
    I updated java too.

That's the best way to do it. It sure sounds like something is trying to protect you. Maybe just disabling the AVG is not enough. They may have a special downloadable uninstaller just to remove AVG completely. Of course you could also start over with a new Win 7 install and don't mess it up with an antivirus or other browsers until IE8 is working properly. I believe Win 7 64-bit comes with both the 64 and 32 bit versions of IE8. The 32-bit version should work with all web pages. If it works and a difficult problem arises later there is always Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset.

Its hard to get every part of AVG to not run. The best bet is to uninstall it. If it cannot uninstall properly, AVGs website now has a program made specifically for uninstalling it that is better than the regular uninstaller. MSE is definitely better than AVG these days. AVG used to be great, but its time on top has passed.

I fixed my problem and it wasn't AVG at all. (although I have replaced AVG with Kapersky internet security 2010).

I had a thought come to mind to unplug my Modem and router to reset them.

    This did the trick.

(Never had the issue with XP though).
    Thanks for all the replies.
