What were the circumstances around this event? I assume this just started happening within the past day or 2?

What chkdsk tags did you run? Be sure to run chkdsk /r.

it happened Saturday. the day before it started doing this, we had a bad thunderstorm.
tried chkdsk /r. it states "The type of the file system is NTFS."
    "Cannot lock current drive."
"Windows cannot run disk checking on the volume because it is write protected."

I wonder if the drive is damaged. Try running a diagnostic on it: HD Diagnostic
