Tried the repair install ... it ran for a couple of hours ... was at 90%+ on the final task, restarted, said the upgrade had failed and reinstalled the old version

How do I test the sticks individually?

Please continue with checking RAM. Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot. Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots. If it's not due to bad ram or bad mobo slots, then it can be the compatibility issue between the sticks of ram.

Edit: take all sticks out but 1, test that stick on all of the slots that you have

Bad slot? I removed all but one memory stick. Tested it and it passed. Moved it to the second slot and got three beeps on start up. Nothing happened. Checked the other 3 sticks. All seemed ok. Added a stick to the 3rd and 4th slot and the computer crashed after about 5 minutes. Removed those two extra memory sticks and restarted with just the one stick in the first slot. If the second slot is bad does that make #3 and 4 not work?

I ran the first test with just the single 2gig stick in and it passed this time.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

On start up the computer ran a chkdsk and fixed a bad index and removed a bad file

What would be the next step? Replace the mother board? Can any of the other chips be used if slot 2 is bad?

Additional information: Upon further testing slots 2 & 4 appear to be bad and one memory stick. It appears we've isolated the problem. Now I just have to wait for VelocityMicro to open on Tuesday and make my phone call. If there are any other tests I should do please let me know. I'll work with two good sticks in slots 1 & 3 and hopefully won't see a BOSD ... thanks again for all of your help
