    System Hang

I've had 2 system hangs today, approximately 4hrs apart. In both cases, the mouse cursor froze, although when moving the mouse the LED behaved normally. Also, the keyboard was dead, no keys would work and the lock indicators would not operate when the appropriate key was pressed. The F.Lock indicator did work, and was toggable.

I've rolled back the drivers for the keyboard and mouse from versions 8.0.225.0 to 7.0.280.0, and shall see if that makes any difference. I've not installed any software, nor done anything different to what I normally do.

I remember that NVidia once had a buggy graphics driver and had to withdraw it, so I'm wondering whether or not the same has occured with Microsoft's latest mouse and keyboard drivers. I suppose it could be possible.

If it does it again, I shall probably reinstall (I'm thinking of doing this anyway).

Dwarf, that was the symptoms I had and it was my NVidia drivers. I had to use older drivers to cure the problem.

Strange. I've run the current Nvidia graphics driver since they were released without any problem - 8.17.12.5896 (258.96). If you are referring to chipset drivers, then it's not them since I didn't install any and my system has been working fine with the ones as supplied with the OS.

If it is the graphics driver you are referring to, what version is the one you're using? What driver version are you using for your keyboard?

I should also point out that my system was on continuously for about 9hrs yesterday without a problem.

I was referring to the video card driver; my version is 8.17.11.9621. It appears to be a tad older than your current driver. I went through five drivers to get one that did not freeze. Mine started out every now and then and got more frequent as time progresses. Maybe in your case it was just a freak glitch.

I've been looking through my post history, and I've come across this: Strange message

I don't remember getting this sort of message before when updating my keyboard/mouse driver. However, on this occasion I did (the driver came through Windows Update). I shall download the full packages directly from Microsoft (the site is now updated with the new drivers) and see if that makes a difference.

I had Microsoft updates for my mouse and keyboard recently. They showed up as updates. No pop ups until I installed the updates. Then I had pop ups to fine tune the keyboard and mouse.

Did your system hang before or after installing these updates? I am well aware that crashes and hangs which are attributable to a driver may not manifest themselves immediately, but sometimes a varying period after.

Incidentally, this is what my graphics card is reading.

I have had no problem since updating those mouse and keyboard drivers. It went smooth as silk. I have had no freezes in since I got the NVidia driver situation straightened out back in January.

I'm wondering if it is the keyboard driver that is at fault. I've just checked the MS downloads, and version 8.0 is still listed for the mouse, but the keyboard is now listed as version 7.1. I'm almost certain that both were listed as version 8.0 last night.
