Windows 7: Front USB Port Causing BSOD

Front USB Port Causing BSOD

So, for a while whenever I plugged in a USB stick (tried different sticks) into the front USB port. I would randomly get a BSOD, crash dump. Sometimes I could plug and unplug it 10-20x with no BSOD. Sometimes its the first time.

Today I noticed something different though. As I went to put the stick in, before I even got the stick into the slot (just touched the lip of the USB port). It caused a BSOD. This leads me to think its some sort of improper grounding, or something to do with the USB cable that plugs from the case into the motherboard.

This was a custom store-assembled computer bought from a local computer hardware store.

Its at work so I havent had a chance to test with it yet. But just checking to see if anyone know if it might be caused by something else.

I originally thought it might have to do with a BIOS setting.
I've tried disabling USB legacy Mass Storage and USB 3.0, so it cant be either of those.
Im, gunna try plugging the Case USB into some different Mobo USB connectors.

Difficult to guess with BSOD

It could even be a port driver.
But we need those files.

Originally I figured it might have to do with drivers or windows.

But when it crashed with me only touching the case with the usb stick (I didn't even get to start plugging it yet, as i was still lining it up with the slot). This leads me to believe that driver/software issues probably weren't the cause.

Its the computer at work, so I cant do any testing or collecting of the crash dump info until tomorrow.

Just figured Id try to find out some possibilities before then.

Just posting the solution for others.

Apparently some antec cases have a grounding issue with their front panel USB port assembly.
It isn't grounded properly, and can cause the computer to BSOD.

Anything that can cause a static shock will set the computer off, so sometimes the problem can seem "random".

After contacting Antec, they are shipping a new port assembly to replace the old one. I will repost of the problem persists after the replacement.
