The upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 was done using an HP-provided upgrade disc and the laptop was sold including a free upgrade to Windows 7 when the OEM upgrade became available. So, there should not be any hardware not compatible with Windows 7.

I can't understand how drivers can be so old when the laptop is only 1 year old and I downloaded all the drivers for this laptop from...
Unfortunately, manufacturers offer these upgrades in order to sell computers. This means that such a computer (and I do not know specifically about yours) may be marginally capable of running Win 7. The computer may be one year old; but the components of it can be much older, thus the older drivers. The eHome technology in your computer is an example of this.

In addition, upgrade installations quite often have problems. A clean install is the best by far.

Let's try something. First create a restore point or a system image or both. Then do a search in the C:\Windows folder for RTSTOR64.SYS and enecir.sys. Rename them from .sys to .bak. This will break the card reader and any IR devices. However, you can restore it by renaming them again. Reboot and these drivers will not load. Do not not rename enecir.sys if you have a wireless keyboard or a wireless mouse unless you have a PS2 or USB keyboard and mouse to fall back on. Let's see how your system does with these drivers not loading. This will tell us whether these drivers are the cause of your problems or not.

I agree that the Realtek driver may be the cause, but it fails to update. Each time I try to install the current driver, it fails and installs a generic old driver.
Instead of having no driver at all, are there steps I can take to make the newer driver install?
