BSOD Randomly

Hi, recently my Packard Bell laptop keeps just automatically restarting without shutdown and when I log back into windows I get the error report below (same error every time). I got the laptop in May so not exactly old, and it happens even just browsing the internet not playing any games. Can anyone give me advice as to what the problem is and whether I should get a new laptop as still in warrenty? Checked for virus/spyware and theres no problems. Thanks

Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit

You have a slew of them. I looked at your four more recent dumps. All of them show the same error code:

Error code 7F, UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP - usual causes are Memory corruption, Hardware (memory in particular), Installing a faulty or mismatched hardware (especially memory) or a failure after installing it, 3rd party firewall, Device drivers, SCSI/network/BIOS updates needed, Improperly seated cards, Incompatible storage devices, Overclocking, Virus scanner, Backup tool, Bad motherboard, Missing Service Pack

Start by uninstalling Norton/Symantec using this uninstall tool: Info > Tool. Norton is known cause of BSOD on some Win 7 systems. Next uninstall AVG using this tool: Info > Tool (32bit) - Tool (64 bit). If you have Identity Protection installed, uninstall it also with this tool: Info > Tool. AVG is also know to cause crashes on some Win 7 systems and one of the possible causes of your crashes is an antivirus scanner. Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials and make sure Windows Firewall is turned on.

I also find Zone Alarm on your system. ZA is an almost guaranteed cause of a crash. Remove it with this tool:

This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
        use .trap on that value
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
kb will then show the corrected stack.

I also find a number of out of date drivers on your system. Generally speaking, out of date third party drivers can and do cause conflicts memory corruption and crashes. You need to update these drivers, especially the 2008 driver.

How To Find Drivers:
- I have listed links to most of the drivers in the code box below. Please use the links there to see what info I've found about those drivers.
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: Drivers and Downloads
- - To remove any left over driver remnants, especially from graphics cards, use driver sweeper Guru3D - Driver Sweeper
I will help you with any drivers you can't find.

Post if you need any help with these and post back when you updated, uninstalled and renamed. Your next step will be to enable Driver Verifier following the instructions in Jonathan King's excellent tutorial: Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable. Keep in mind that Driver Verifier will cause a BSOD if it encounters a faulty driver. Upload any all Driver Verifier enabled dumps.

Hi Carl, thanks so much for the help.

I followed your instructions upto the drivers and since then the laptop hasnt bluescreened. I have looked into updating those drivers and the only one I could find a later version of was RtHDMIVX. The other driver programs I couldn't find any updates for. For example, the PxHlpa64.sys is from the driver HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT30N driver which I cannot find an update for. It does seem though that removing those security programs may have sorted the problem out.

You are certainly welcome. Thank you very much for the update. I'm surely glad to hear that your system is running better. My guess is that those anti-malware programs were at least 90% of your problems. That combination was almost a guaranteed crash.

Good job on the drivers. PxHlpa64.sys may work just fine. If you have another BSOD, you can always rename it to see if it was the problem. You are right, there is no update. There is an update for iaStor.sys. You can try to find it or forget it unless you have more trouble.

Unless you have already enabled it, don't enable Driver Verifier. Run your system and let's see how it does. If you get another BSOD, upload the dump and enable Driver Verifier.

If you don't get another BSOD, post back in a couple of days and let us know. Fingers crossed! :)
