Windows 7 Pro 64 bit black screen with mouse cursor only on boot up an

Hi there, Windows 7 system recently froze on me when I attempted to move a large folder to a USB harddrive. I was not able to close the file window so I decided to shut down my PC with the regular Start -> Shut Down.

Now when I try to turn on my computer, after the "Starting Windows" and the Microsoft flag it goes to a pure black screen with just a mouse cursor (movable), no keyboard commands or right clicks work (eg. ctrl+alt+del does nothing).

I tried booting into safe mode, safe mode with network, they all do the same thing after the "Starting Windows" screen. Tried booting with my Windows 7 Pro 64 bit installation disc as well and went into start up repair - no problem detected. Tried system restore and it went successfully, however after clicking restart the same thing happened again!

This is really driving me crazy, could some one please help me out? I really don't want to reinstall Windows and lose my files (since I can't even get into any form of Windows interface I am not able to do a repair install).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

[Update]: something strange just happened now - after quite a long time of wait the Picture with a user name underneath it does show up! However when I clicked on the picture to try and log in, the computer automatically shut down and restarted...does that help? Lastly I am really lost now as I just tried booting with my Windows 7 installation disc and NO restore points show up anymore as opposed to the several that showed up previously.

Use System Restore and restore to a previous point.
Update all of your Drivers and get all Windows Updates.
If this doesn't fix things, then you're going to have to backup your stuff, wipe the hard drive, and reinstall Windows.
