Windows 7: Random BSOD's

FYI - when troubleshooting, make only 1 change at a time - then test to see if that fixes the problem.

If WinDbg points to a 3rd party (non-Microsoft) driver, then it's presumed that that driver is bad (either incompatible or damaged/corrupted). Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and get the "Created" time stamp. If it's old (2007 or earlier) it's most likely an incompatibility - if not, then it's probably damaged (malware can cause this also).

The point here being that the PCTools program has been shown to be damaged by WinDbg. The next troubleshooting step is to remove it and see if it stops the BSOD's. If it does, then you've found the culprit - if it doesn't, then we'll have to look for other causes (such as damaged hardware or other conflicting programs).

But, according to my reference table (link here: Driver Reference ) MDPMGRNT.SYS belings to MacDrive Partition Driver (It's possible that ProTools licensed this from the MaCrive people)

If you suspect the RAM, MemTest will test it - but doesn't stress it very much. Prime95 (using the Blend test) will stress it to see if it starts to spit out errors.

Good luck!

The MacDrive Partition Driver was something Pro Tools installed. I saw it when i installed Pro Tools.

As i had bsods both before i installed Pro Tools and after i removed it again it's sure to say that it's not that. I know that the MacDrive Partition Driver was uninstalled when i uninstalled Pro Tools.
Pro Tools uses a lot of ram so that may be why my pc crashed more when i was using Pro Tools.

I'm testing my ram right now, one stick at a time, one slot at a time with prime95.

This isn't necessarily true - it's only true if you've verified that ALL traces of the program were removed.

In particular, check to see if the MacDrive stuff was installed and if the driver for it was removed. Program installers handle hundreds, if not thousands, or files and registry entries when installing. Some of them are deemed "harmless" by the developer (and other are deemed necessary to leave installed) - so the uninstaller may not remove all traces. And it only takes 1 thing to do this.

I used to use a program called Total Uninstall (years ago) - and it monitored every change to the system. That way you could use it's uninstall routine to remove all traces. I don't know if it's still available - but a Google search should show it up. Install Pro Tools with TotalUninstall monitoring it - then see if it can remove everything.

Prime 95 tests - CPU, mobo, and RAM (Blend test mostly tests RAM). So errors in Prime95 may not indicate RAM problems - but it is a place to start from.

Good luck!

This is weird ..

I tried testing all of the sticks individually and all the slots individually - 10 minutes for each blend test, i had gotten errors so fast before so i thought it would be enough for errors to show now.
Nothing. No errors. I put all 4 sticks in again, run a test, and no errors. Was this just a loose ram stick? Am i not testing for enough time? I guess i will have to see if i still get blue screens to figure that out...?

Thanks a lot for all the help, i feel like I'm getting closer :P

Loose sticks of RAM can cause this.
The "test" is to wait and see if you still get BSOD's

If you do, then we'll track them down also - until we eliminated all sources of errors.

Good Luck!
