Its probably a driver.

In a cmd prompt type driverquery. If you see any drivers older than July 2009, update them.

If it is only one game, it is too much for your system.

it happens at desktop/welcome screen and in a few games. my system specs more than meet the games req. there are quite a few items on the driverquery list older than 07/09. one in particular caught my eye is my wireless adapter. but this was the newest driver i could find on the manufacturer website, seeing as i was playing online, and it froze in safe mode w/networking could this be it?

edit: there are many on driverquery list older than 07/09, i dont know what most of them are, or even how to start updating them.

The Best Way
How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- The most common drivers are listed on this page: http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: http://www.carrona.org/drvrdown.html
To remove any left over driver remnants, especially from graphics cards, use driver sweeper

thanks for all your help with this!
just to clarify, i should work my way down the list in driverquery and follow the chart to update any that are earlier than july 2009?

edit: sorry to be a right pain again . . . ive had a thought, the support cd that came with my motherboard would not run on my 64 bit system. i updated as many drivers as i could without it. is this the cd that would normally be doing this?

Start with the oldest. If your research shows a Microsoft Driver, move on. How many are we talking about?

the list is taller than my screen, don't know how i would screen shot it. most are in date but many aren't.
i have started with the ones i recognise, namely my linksys driver for my wireless card .
it looks like the version of the card i have has no win7 drivers for it, and i have stumbled across a forum that is describing my problem being caused by the wireless card. seems they have found a workaround that downloads a different driver for the same card,
if i post the link can u take a look and help me understand? maybe this could be the answer?

All I can promise is that I will look at it and give you the best help that I can.
But you should have updated drivers, even if not for this problem.
