    BSOD on sleep

    Hey guys,

I have tried to tackle this one myself but am banging my head against the wall so need help with this.

My Sony Vaio VGN-NS10L crashes every time I put it into sleep mode - this started a few months ago, seemingly at random (though presumably not random, of course). I've looked at the minidump to the best of my ability and figured that it's some kind of power state failure with my wireless card (Atheros AR928X).

I have tried the following thing:

    • Turning on/off the wireless card's power management options
    • Disabling the wireless card

Both of the above result in the 'device manager' freezing up
    • Booted in 'safe mode with networking' and disabled the wireless card, and it worked - my laptop can sleep and wake normally again
    • I went onto wiki-drivers and tried various options of the latest, and previous drivers. But as soon as I reactivate the wifi card, the laptop crashes on sleep again.

If anyone can spot anything in the crash dump that I am missing, I'd be very grateful. At the moment I'm moving towards my last resort which is a full re-format and re-install of Win7, with no guarantees that that will even fix the problem. Bad times!

Hi Craig. I will take a look.

    Error code 9F, DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE.

I looked at your three most recent dumps. All have the same error code and all blame athr.sys, which is Atheros Extensible Wireless LAN device driver from Atheros Communications, Inc. belonging to Atheros CB42/CB43/MB42/MB43 Network Adapter.

    Code:

Your athr.sys driver is up to date. On the off chance the driver is corrupted, I suggest that you download another copy from the Sony site, uninstall the present driver and install the new one. If this does not fix the issue, I have to suspect the adapter is bad. You might research this issue on the Sony site and see if it is a common problem that Sony may have a fix for.

My only other suggestion is that if your computer is under warranty, let the shop techs have a go at it. Or if it is not under warranty, you can purchase a USB wireless adapter and try that. You will have to disable the Atheros adapter if you do this.

Before you ship your computer off or purchase another adapter, I suggest you update the following drivers, especially those in red font. They are way obsolete. Some are XP drivers, especially the first one listed.

DMICall.sys Tue Dec 05 02:14:23 2000 - Sony DMI Call serviceSony eSupport - Electronics - Select Your Model

ElbyCDIO.sys Tue Feb 17 12:11:28 2009 - CDRTools/ElbyCDIO/DVD Region Killer/VirtualCloneDrive (elby CloneDVD™ 2) Cdrtools (Cdrecord) release information. If an update is not available, uninstall the software and install something that is Win 7 compatible.

    rimsptsk.sys Thu Dec 22 03:02:21 2005
    - this is another XP driver. Ricoh Memory Card Reader driver OEM - none at http://www.ricoh.com. I don't think you can update this driver. If you can't, uninstall the card reader and upgrade to one that is certified compatible with Win 7.

VClone.sys Fri May 22 19:08:32 2009 - VirtualCloneCD Driver by Elaborate Bytes AGelby CloneDVD™ 2. Update the driver or uninstall the software.

VSTAZL3.SYS Wed Oct 15 20:30:03 2008 - Conexant Conexant SoftK56 Modem Conexant: Support. Update this driver. If you cannot and do not use the modem, you can disable the modem and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and rename the driver from .sys to .bak. Reboot and the driver will not load.

    VSTCNXT3.SYS Wed Oct 15 20:29:13 2008 - See above

    VSTDPV3.SYS Wed Oct 15 20:32:04 2008 - See above.

    yk62x86.sys Mon Feb 23 09:44:18 2009 - Marvell Yukon Network Marvell: Support.
Update/uninstall/upgrade the above drivers/software/hardware. There are a couple of obsolete drivers in that group that can be adversely affecting your wireless adapter. Reobbot and see how your system runs. Bottom line, you cannot run outdated XP stuff on a Win 7 system.
