    BSOD and odd boot up

    Window 7 64bit
    Original OS: window xp
    full retail version

    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M52S-S3P Rev.2
    CPU: phenom 965 black edition
Video card: ati xfx hd 5770
    PSU: 600w

I just installed a new a video card, an XFX Radeon HD 5770. I'm having some difficulty booting up. I say difficulty, because it does eventually boot, but it takes a while to get there. It's like a series of small brownouts happen before the machines goes to boot and POST.

When I hit the power button, the fans start to spin, and 2 clicks come from what I think is the video card (these are not like beeps you'd get normally if there's a MOBO problem, but they don't sound mechanical). Then the fans stop spinning. This happens 5-10 times before the machine actually goes on to boot normally.

I put back in the old video card (Gigabyte gt 8800) and the machine booted normally. I tried the new card again using some of the other power connectors, but it still takes a few pumps before booting up. There are 3 case fans and some LED lights, but there should be more than enough power flowing through the system.

Also I am getting BSOD after installing the new card.

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
    OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
    Locale ID: 1033
    Additional information about the problem:

Three of these point directly to hardware. either RAM or video.

This error has been linked to excessive paged pool usage and may occur due to user-mode graphics drivers crossing over and passing bad data to the kernel code.

    I would

    1-run memtest
Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot. Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

    2-re-install the video driver

When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver. In order to do that we recommend using Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.

Question: does it do the same thing when booting into safe mode (F8)?

Let us know if you need assistance

I reinstalled my video card and drivers several times already, plus reseating it, I even reformated my computer. Guess I gotta check my RAMs. Also, this doesn't happen with my old card GT 8800.

    It's not the RAMs.

If not the video driver, and not the ram, it is probably the video card, or PSU.

    What brand/model is your PSU?

I suggest testing the card out in another machine. If that machine then has problems, you know to RMA the card.

PSU seems okay, although that does not completely eliminate the possibility. Still, best to focus on other things.

Do try testing the card in another machine if possible.
