For starters you can run the system file checker. Open an elevated command prompt (right click and select "Run as Administrator"), and type SFC /SCANNOW. This will try to fix any corrupt system files. If any are detected you will want to run it multiple times until none are found. You may also have a faulty hard drive. I recommend using HD Tune Pro trial (free for 30 days) or use the diagnostics software provided by your hard drive manufacturer. This will tell you if it is faulty.

Hi -

Bugcheck 0x74 = an error exists within the NT Registry, specifically the SYSTEM hive is corrupted.

Try booting into SAFEMODE and select "Last known Good Configuration" - tap the F8 key repeatedly during boot-up.

However, given the issue you mentioned with chkdsk, there may be a problem with your HDD. I would suggest that you run HDD Diagnostics.

Start with SeaTools (for DOS) --> SeaTools | Seagate

Burn ISO to CD with ImgBurn --> The Official ImgBurn Website

Boot with SeaTools CD.

If SeaTools comes up OK, run HDD manufacturer's diagnostics --> Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Regards. . .

Checkdisk (GUI) stops prematurely
This may have come up before, but I didn't notice it in the first few pages of the search results. When I plug my external HDD in at TAFE their network screws it up (permissions?). As a result (when I'm at home) I have to run chkdsk on my drive or Windows claims that it is "Read only". When...
